Default Those Mercedes engines... - 06-16-2006 , 12:43 PM

.... have basically blown up 49 times, since Mercedes teamed up with
McLaren in 1995. And is still going strong (i.e blowing up)

Drivers who had to pay the price (and are still paying) for this devil
sitting on their backs being:

MH - 13 times
MB - 04 times
DC - 14 times
KR - 16 times
JPM - 02 times

Details:

Race Car Number Driver Laps

2005 - 18 - JPN 20 KR NA
2006 - 7 - MON 3 KR 50
2006 - 5 - EUR 4 JPM 52

.... and still counting.

I wonder how the majority stake holders at McLaren are not bothered
by this show given that at an average we have 4 engine blow ups per
season 95-05 (Leaving the 2 in current 2006 season).

Yes, I know the stake numbers, which being:
30:30:40 percent split between Ron:TAG's Mansour OjjehCAG (Chrysler)

By which I would have thought that DCAG had to be more accountable?
I am not at all impressed regarding their plan of action & how they
plan to sort these issues out. Infact, if you see, other that the 1999
season its been happening consistently, meaning that there is no
plan in place to counter this?

Looking at above numbers for Kimi, I think he should sue!

I wonder if I should mail these figures to Fernando so that he can
atleast add a performance clause in his McLaren contract?

I think I should. Or maybe he has done it already?

Cheers,
Anand

Anand

He doesn't need a performance
clause...

He needs a "sanity" clause!

Hmm. I wish GLIB's had a SQL interface...

If we were to take 1995 as the baseline (since McLaren-Merc
partnership), Ferrari have nailed them then:

Just 7 failures in the period from 1995-2005, with

MS - 3 times
EI - 2 times
RB - 2 times

Race Car No Drv Laps
========================================
1996 - 9 - FRA 1 MS 0
1997 - 15 - LUX 6 EI 22
1998 - 1 - AUS 3 MS 5
1999 - 3 - RSM 4 EI 46
2000 - 9 - FRA 3 MS 58
2001 - 16 - USA 2 RB 71
2002 - 2 - MAS 2 RB 39

Amazing and Impressive! And expected.

Ferrari though wrong color would just be the right team for
Kimi! Its been some time Ferrari have changed their livery,
isn't it? I think they should get one, when Kimi joins them!

The least thing they could do for Kimi's fans...

Anand

The bitter and twisted tifauxi and schufauxi still claim the FIA bringing in
the 2 race reliability rule was somehow supposed to help English teams (at a
time Ferrari were achieving 100% reliability)

McLaren never have been keen on hiring smooth and sympathetic drivers.

I remember their blow up in practice at Montreal in 96 like it was
yesterday, I've never seen that much smoke pour out of anything that
wasn't running for office.

These are just the retirements by way of engines. I haven't
really quoted the other ones!

49 blowups in 11 seasons compared to 7 of Ferrari is a rather
embarassing figure. 7 times more! I think it would be incorrect
to blame the drivers, for the race engineers would have
immediately pointed it out. I heard Rossi saying that he really
did not appreciate so many people telling him what to do, what
not to do etc, and I would have imagined the same happening
with all the drivers?

Geoff, any remote possibilty of pulling up the performance data
of the Mercedes engines used in various series apart from F1
like Le Mans, DTM etc?

Not available to me, I'm afraid. I'm having enough trouble finding the
time to keep GLIBS up to date.

Cheers

Geoff

P.S.: Anyone waiting for British GP data, it'll get uploaded on Sunday -
I had a flaky connection since then, hence the reason GLIBS is out of date.
