The rednecks were amazing, I'd always heard stories but to see them in
action was terrifying even from the safety of a TV screen. They didn't
even seem to think for one moment that it was all a set up - they just
went straight into throwing rocks!
Mmmm. Yes, but... can we be sure it wasn't rigged?

The looks of fear on the gangs faces and the crews reaction was more
than enough to convince me it was real.

I did think for a bit that it might've all been a bit Blair Witch, but
it felt very, very genuine. Not a good ad for Alabama.

Their comments when entering New Orleans (about not realising how
devastated it still was) shows that maybe they didn't really do enough
research as to the places and situations they were heading into.

Yes, that was quite a poignant ending - it's scary to think that in the
richest country in the world there's still such apathy towards their own
people.

The purest image I ever saw of that strange schizophrenic condition that
afflicts the United States, was when I was on a bus going through DC,
and saw a bunch of homeless folks sleeping on the steps near the gates
to the Whitehouse.

Interesting image, to say the very least.

Also, I lived in Connecticut (a very, very small state), which contains
both the richest, and poorest areas (per capita) in the US.

Almost as bad as English football fans.

...or Scottish ones
English football fans actually have a deservedly good reputation
nowadays, have had for a good few years now.

The Italians and the Turks are far worse... I can't recall the last
time an English fan firebombed anyone, or shot anyone.

And I believe Emma was commenting on how the British TV crew did not realize
the devastation. WE do, though.

Eh? ITYM Scottish.

The English ones were (more recently than "a good few years") involved
in all sorts of trouble.

My first trip to the US was to DC in about '95. I took a wrong turning
a few blocks from the White House and found myself in an area that was
as desperate as anywhere I've seen in Leeds or Manchester or Liverpool.

But there's that kind of squalour everywhere. Take London for
example, fifteen minutes' walk from the Houses of Parliament and
you find some areas of awful deprivation South of the Thames.

Top Gear was awesome last night. They had to buy cars in Miami for $1000 or
less and drive them like 800 miles to New Orleans. When they went through

Rules OK" and "Country and Western is Rubbish".

Brilliant episode - and I'm pretty sure that the service station
greeting wasn't staged. They looked genuinely scared. In fact, I
thought it was pretty ordinary that Jeremy took off and left Hammond
and May behind to face the wrath of of the rednecks. Not exactly the
kind of action that wins you a VC.

Hey - the Poms won some silverware down here as well! Sincere
congrats - and Collingwood and Plunkett looked awesome. Shame you
lads peaked in the final week of a 3 month tour. Hopefully that's
exactly the slap in the face we needed before we all head to the
Carribbean... :-) See you there!

Mmmm. Yes, but... can we be sure it wasn't rigged? Top Gear always seem to
fake up parts of their film inserts (the caravan holiday springs to mind,
particularly the staged fire-y ending).
I think you have to appreciate that most of it has to be faked to allow
filming to take place. The episodes with Clarkson in a fast car dashing
across the continent with the other two racing him in trains and planes
springs to mind. How do the camera crew who film Clarkson blasting past at
150 mph get there? In a Transit van probably with Clarkson stopping every
five minutes to let them film him. Then you get the pre-decided finale with
one or the other, Clarkson usually, pipping the others to the post by 30
seconds. It's all bollocks basically. Every one of those cross country
dashes probably took a couple of days to stage and film.

I haven't seen the current ep yet but it's downloading now. Sounds good
anyway.

They go back and film those the next day, apparently.
