Default Top Japanese Toyota honcho saying era of top designers is over - 06-25-2006 , 03:21 PM

Speed TV interviewed the head honcho at Toyota about the Willis sacking
which mirrored the Gascoyne sack. This Japanese guy said the era of
the single guru designer is over. There will be Japanese
consensus/committee designs. Wow I bet that will work very well. I
wonder if he will stand by his comments after seeing how shitty Ralf's
car went.

They interviewed some guy at Honda with a German name who is an
American and he tried to say very little. They also interviewed
Whitmarsh and Brawn. Brawn said yeah you have hundreds of employees
but it is good to have one guy who knows what is going on. I would
have thought it was a pretty funny question for Brawn as he and Byrne
are pretty much the gurus at Ferrari plus Paolo doing the engines.

From what I've heard of the Gascoyne departure, they're not comparable
at all. There were other issues at play in Gascoyne's departure; the
Willis one is just down to 'different ways of working'.

Remember when all the Yanks came over to Jag to show them how it was
done. The even brought over that guy who stuck parts onto Indy cars to
slow them down.
Brian.

Then they got that guy Dr. Robert Hubbard, a professor of biomechanical
engineering at Michigan State University, who sent someone over to sell them
those weird support devices which kept the drivers necks from snapping like
twigs when the car stopped suddenly. And I bet you thought that his name was
Hans and they named a device after him!

Yes, right, as soon as the "Yanks" left, then Jaguar F1 was successfull
again, right?
You really ought to stick to "Jacks not testing".

Or making fun of Gerry Donaldson.

many years covered Formula One racing internationally, as a TV commentator,
journalist and author. He is working on his 20th non-fiction book. His
biography of Canadian F1 driver Gilles Villeneuve is the basis of a major
motion picture scheduled for release in 2007.

Selected Publications:

Formula 1: The Autobiography. Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2001; also in Dutch.
Teamwork: West McLaren Mercedes. CollinsWillow, 1998; also in German.
David's Diary (with David Coulthard). Simon & Schuster UK, 1998.
My First Season In Formula 1(with Jacques Villeneuve). HarperCollins Canada,

I was not entirely clear. What I meant was another big Japanese company
throwing big money at F1 and design talent getting frustrated.

F1 is hard and Renault and the Scuderia with Brawn/Byrne/Martinelli are
no pushovers.

Well one thing the "Yanks" tried to do was Bobby Rahal trying to hire
Newey away from McLaren. Bobby worked with Adrian way back in CART
days. Ron quickly put a stop to that. Bobby might have actually done
a decent job but he never had the chance.

I wish Jackie had kept the team but his son's illness and recovery were
a higher priority which was the correct decsion. Stewart had a few
good runs for a new team.

I'm sure most here know it's an acronym for Head And Neck Support device.
