Default UK champion overlap - 5 Live F1 wrong - 10-30-2009 , 09:37 AM

Stuff sent into 5 Live F1 during the practice seems hardly checked
before read out as fact;

e.g. "At all times has a past, present or future UK champ been in F1
since 1952".

So, Damon Hill left at the end of 1999, and Jenson Button began at the
start of 2000 - etc.

But;

James Hunt left after the 1979 Monaco GP, so only a few races in,
Nigel Mansell didn't start until 1980 - and was not in those first
1980 races either I seem to remember.

John Watson was in it then, but was never actually champ, Stewart had
long retired, Damon Hill not in it either by 1980.

So, wrong.

I thought the text or tweet said "in every season since Hawthorn's debut
in 1954" - although he first appeared in F1 in 1952. It certainly didn't
sound like it was meant as continuous. I might have misheard of course.

I did mishear, 'since Mike Hawthorn joined the sport in 1952 there has not
been a single season that did not feature a past, present or future F1
champion'.

You got it easy mate. Not only did I have to have my father beat me to
death, wake up 4 hours before I went to sleep and not eat for 3 months,
Varsha - SPEEDS answer to James Allen - didn't know where the track
boundaries were.

Does the words "white lines" ring a bell to anyone here?

Brian, in how many season have there been NO CURRENT world champions in
the field? The only season I can think of, apart from 1950, would be
1994, and not for all of it. Monaco, Spain, Canada, Great Britain,
Germany, Hungary, Belgium, Italy and Portugal there was no current world
champion driving. Of course at Brazil, Aida and San Marino, Senna drove.
And at France, Jerez, Japan and Australia, Mansell drove.

Are 1950 and 1994 the only two anomolies?

1959 is the only season without any (excluding 1950). Also 1958 was similar to 1994,
Fangio drove in two races only.

The most in a season was five in 1968 (although Clark only drove once) and 1970
(Brabham, G Hill, Surtees, Hulme, Stewart). If Kimi stays in 2010 we should have
four, which happened before in 1964, 1966 (limited drives by Phil Hill), 1967,
1969, 1971, 1972 (Surtees limited), 1973, 1979, 1983 (Jones limited), 1985
(again Jones limited), 1986 & 1999.
