There have been four previous points systems.
1950-59 - 8-6-4-3-2 (plus one point for the fastest lap)
1960 - 8-6-4-3-2-1
1961-90 - 9-6-4-3-2-1 |
But readers need to remember, in almost all the
above years, a number of races had to be
dropped from a driver's final total.
(number to count varied but often only one more
than 50%, 66% or 75% of total races.)
So, that worked against the person with
lots of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th etc. place finishes.
Example, in 1988, Prost earned 105 points,
Senna 94, but they could only count 11 of 16
races. So Prost had deleted 3, 2nd place finishes,
and Senna a 4th and a 6th.
Counting final total, Senna WDC with 90, Prost 87.
