Default Renault World Series - Donington - 09-10-2005 , 03:48 PM

Did anyone who attended today know what happened to Martin Donnelly taking
Senna's Lotus around? Was it cancelled or did I just miss it?

Well done to Arnoux for ditching the R24 in the gravel after 1/2 lap too !!

LOL did he? Now I wished I'd hung around longer. Last year Senna's Lotus
broke - not sure what happened today, I got fed up with standing in the
rain by lunchtime. Going to be back tomorrow though.

We were over by the hairpin (ready for a quick escape after the F1 car had
finished) we heard it getting closer & closer and then silence ...... he'd
spun it into the gravel.

Probably a bit late now but anyone going today should be aware that the car
parks (well the one we were in anyway) were becoming very muddy, unless it
dries out today I think the tractors will be needed to get you out!

Thankfully it didn't rain there today so the car parks didn't get worse.
In fact it was quieter than we thought and only took us 10 minutes to
get out to the motorway via Donington village. The place we found the
most mud was around the funfair.

Great day which even included watching some racing, plus it was
wonderful to meet up with Phil & Jaz again! :-)

....and I think the World Series cars look and sound fantastic, *proper*
racing cars.

Just discovered that the engine is based on the Nissan 350Z block, which
will amuse my mad Fairlady fan friend Pete.

Did Senna's car make an appearance on the Sunday? and did Arnoux keep the
R24 on track?

The world series cars are what F1 cars 'should' be like, no silly
aerodynamic aids growing off the sidepods. The sound of those 3.5L V6's is
awesome. Shame about the traction control though.

It was indeed good fun, and good to see you all again - it has been
ages, as was remarked on the day, several times.

Properly difficult to follow though, due to half the leaders taking each
other out into the first corner off the start, followed by 2 teammates a
few laps later, and late on in the race, one guy who was in 8th or 9th
spinning into the Redgate gravel trap all on his own. Plus as soon as
they started having pitstops it became impossible to hear the commentary
for more than 5s at a time due to field spread (and of course, I had my
headphones tuned to Test Match Special rather than Radio Renault) which
meant that when the leaders eventually took the applause they richly
deserved, I still wasn't sure who won - was it the guy in the yellow
car?! Exciting stuff though - we even saw some overtaking manouvres that
worked as well as the ones that resulted eventually in a collection of 6
cars lined up out of the way in front of us.

I didn't see Senna's car, or the R24 (although the R24 could be heard
circulating from Donington market, which is where we were at the time).
I heard the commentators say in the morning that the R24 would be driven
by Montagny. As I was leaving, the historic collection were circulating,
but it was very much a parade and no one was really giving it any stick.

I did wonder if they had TC, or if that noise was the rev-limiters. Are
you sure?

Yep, pity it was such a low turnout, I'm sure when the tickets were
first available there was talks of a big Penelope. Ah well we still had
a great day out.

The last one was the fault of my brother who had seconds before
commented that the race had become boring and needed someone else to
spin. <G>

Yes, the custard yellow car won and no Phil one of the cars didn't have
Dominatrix written down the side, it said Dominator and you misread it.

I think the red tractor did more miles than some of the race cars on
Sunday!

Hehe, you were very good to go along with our madness - I wouldn't have
blamed you if you'd stayed trackside and met up with us again later! ;-)

Some people didn't bother to say they were going until after (looking at
no one in particular...) - next time, if you're coming, and you're a
regular or at least semi-regular poster, let us know, we are a friendly
bunch, by and large.

Hehe. What happened to the guy who decided to drive through as much of
the gravel trap as possible before rejoining? I lost track of him, too.

Freudian slip, that. I'd claim poor attempt at humour but I already know
I won't get away with it...

I did have an urgent need for batteries for the radio...

Haven't a clue, actually wasn't he a yellow car? Perhaps he was the
winner...

It's kept me wondering as to what was on your mind at the time... ;-)

Ah yes, the ones you could have made a profit on, buy from someone at
one end of the market and sell to someone else at the other!
