Joseph wrote: Oh Oh, do I already see an electrical issue with my newly acquired 99' Chevy Venture? Basically I can't turn the headlights off when its nighttime, the sensor just automatically turn it on. There is a dial control just to the left of the steering wheel that has the three symbol, the O on the left, the LampOn on the right, and the two- opposite-light symbol in the middle. I turn the knob to all of them one at a time but the headlight just won't go off. Of course I could be barking up the wrong tree because I don't have a manual for the car and can't tell what everything means, but I am guessing this dial operates the headlights and the O is supposed to turn it off. Is there something else I need to do if I need to turn off all external lights when the engine is on? Sometimes I am in the parking lot warming up the car and idling, I just don't need the lights on. That is the way they work. I just put in a toggle switch about four weeks ago. This does the trick. I have a 2000 chev Venture. Chris |

Ok - time for me to opine a bit. I agree with the philosophical basis of your gripe, but I disagree with some other aspects of it. I don't think there is an eminent danger from not using DRL's. We drove for decades - many of them, without killing people from a lack of DRL's. DRL's themselves have not been proven to be as effective as hoped, by the NTSB and other agencies that look at this stuff. So - it's not a life and death matter. These people will not kill you. That said - I do like DRL's. I like that I can see them in less than optimum conditions, and I like that even if I'm in a bit of a fog, they do help to penetrate my fog. I'm a human being like everyone else and despite my best efforts to be a conscientious driver all of the time, I sometimes slip into brain-dead mode. Little helpers like this are just that - little helpers in the battle against human nature. Some cars just don't show up well in less than perfect light conditions. Grey's and whites and some other colors just don't show up well and it requires the same old kind of attention to the road that we had to pay 30 years ago. Lights help when we aren't quite that alert. As for those who want to suggest that we all should just be more perfect in our driving habits, I have only two words. One of them - specifically, the second one is "you". We are humans, we make mistakes. Little things can help and it isn't the end of the world for us to embrace them. But... they also are not the end-all to saving lives. It really is not a matter of use them or die. That's the part I'm somewhat objecting to. Now - the one thing that I really wish they would do is turn the damned tail lights on with the DRL. That way I can be lazy and not worry about people seeing me in low light conditions - I won't have to think about turning my lights on. The one thing I'm going to hold fast on though, and I'm going to carry this to my grave... I hate - no, I REALLY hate the assholes that turn on the four way flashers while driving in a line up of cars - none of which is doing over XXmph. Ferchristsake - if everyone is going the same speed - and if you're in the middle of the lineup - turn off those damned flashers. Phew - glad to have gotten that off my chest. |
