Default Fluid Maintenance schedule for 2002 Buick? Cannot find it - 05-16-2007 , 12:20 PM

It's a 2002 Buick Century Custom, V6

Looking for scheduled maintenance for oil, tranny, brake fluids.
Number of miles/time between changing these fluids.
Actually need to know the interval for all the maintenance for this
car.

I have the owner's manual and it is NOT helpful.
Searched Google using various query methods, doesn't seem to be easy
to find.

Can someone help me?
Maybe point me to a place where this information is located?

thank you

Why not use the same interval you used on the last 2-3 cars you've
owned?

Typically, Owners Manual's don't say anything about brake fluid changes.
Most drivers never do them.

I'm not sure if the 5 years / 150,000 miles change interval on
Transmission & Radiator fluid was in effect in 2002. That the interval
for 2005 Buicks.

Does your car have an Oil Life monitor? If not, The 3 Months / 3000
miles interval is highly recommended.

How clean is your oil after 3000 miles? You may be able to go longer.

Good Luck

All that stuff is in the WARRANTY BOOKLET, not the Owner's Manual. You
probably are lacking the warranty booklet, so I will tell you what's what:

Transmission is 100,000 miles. Change the filter and drainable fluid at
that time.
Engine is every six months or 6000 miles whichever comes first for "normal"
operation.
Change the oil filter every oil change.
There is no schedule for fuel filter. I suggest changing it every 12,000
miles to be safe.
The air cleaner, do annually, especially in dusty climates.
Spark plugs every 100,000 miles.
No change interval specifed for power steering unit, but I would suck it
out and refill every two years.
Bleed the brakes every two years, IMO, with complete change of fluid.
Lastly, but not leastly, change out the radiator fluid every five years and
refill with DexCool, and only DexCool.

I hope this helps. Your engine just ticks over at highway speeds and
should last forever.

Sorry for the language but if that's true I got fucked today by the
dealer. The man swore up and down it was TIME for certain things.
He said I needed a Tranny fluid flush [auto tranny], said I needed
"new brake fluid flush" and coolant flush.

Labor + parts=$500!

All I wanted to check was why the "service engine soon" light was on.
He said he was the gas-cap no being sealed good, wanted to sell me one
on top of the $500!

When I got home I took the gas cap OFF, started the car, no warning
messages. Cut off car, put cap on again, started car again no lights.
I repeated this 10 times, no lights came on.

I guess I'm just those fucking idiots people tell you about at work
and school?

The gas cap thing takes a couple of miles of driving. Mine came on at
exactly 3.2 miles after a fill up if I either topped it off to much or did
not tighten it properly. Your test method does not make it come on. Drive
it.

As for the other stuff, it is questionable at best. Transmission fluid used
to be changed along with a filter (if it has one) at some high mileage, but
then they came up with the equipment to do a flush so many places are
selling that now. If the fluid is dark or burnt, it should be changed. If
not, it can last over 150,000 miles.

I've never had the brake fluid changed, but I've had the brakes bled when
pads are changed and at least partially flushed. It is hygroscopic so it is
not a bad idea after 5 or more years.

I may change my anti-freeze this summer in my 2001 with 125,000 miles.
Certainly can't hurt, but I've gone longer.

Keep in mind, the dealer is interesting in making a profit. He does not
care much about you other that the fact that you spend money. Dealers vary,
but most are the most expensive service around. The mechanics are usually
good for brand specific problems, but general services like you had can be
done for much less at good independent garages. I also avoid franchised
repair places like Goodyear, Midas, Jiffy Lube.

As Edwin said, doing what you did would not trigger the "Service Engine
Soon" light. You would have to leave the cap off and drive the car several
miles to accomplish this. However, it can and will trigger the light if left
off long enough. It is the first thing I check when I am asked to scan a
newer car for codes.
If you don't mind me asking, how many miles are on your Buick?
