I think most people would rather not have OnStar and reduce the price
accordingly.

I agree.

I disagree. For some, OnStar is a very good feature. Not only is it a
car phone, it also notifies Emergency Services in the event of a
collision. Nothing wrong with peace of mind.

Then give people the choice?
People do get the choice. They also even get the first 2 (or 3) years free,
and can cancel at any time.

In todays age of electronics, adding it in at the showroom floor could be
trivially easy with some minor adjustments. When I bought my last vehicle
they had a deal of $1500 in options, so I chose remote start as one. They
were in and out in 15 minutes, one led knockout, replaced one relay, added
a jumper and re-keyed the remotes. Clean, fast and done nice.
You continue to prove your ignorance each and every day. The OnStar system
is wired into the car much more then a remote starter. You can get a remote
starter installed a Wal Mart for shit sakes.

For expensive non-esential stuff like OnStar, what a disappointment to
find a vehicle you like but are stuck with the cost and issues of OnStar.
What issues would you be talking about?

Heck, I have a cell phone, what do I need OnStar for? Extra billing?
You drive a Ford truck, so you couldn't have OnStar even if you wanted it.
Also, can your cell phone automatically call an ambulance if you are in an
accident? Can your cell phone unlock your vehicle if the key's are locked
inside? Can your cell phone work as a tracking device so Police can find
your stolen vehicle? You don't like it, fine. Drive your Ford truck with
the Alberta flag on the back window, and the Confederate flag on the roof,
but let others who want it have it.

Chrysler has had a lifetime power train "bold move in marketing"
warranty for two years

You probaly will need it too, but also consider will they be around in 2
years to honor it?
Who's to say you will be around in 2 years to use it? Who's to say anything
will be around in 2 years?

I will rephrase it, give people a choice without paying for it. Nothing is
for free.

But it costs too much.

Now you know one of the reasons I have a Ford! Haven't even scratched a
fender or bumper in over 20 years. Cell phone will do. The chances of
being in an accident where OnStar will help and either a cell or nearby
person could not help is somewhat astronomical. Abet possible, a very
unlikely.

Hell, a recent incident. A car was stolen with OnStar. The hitch is a baby
was still in the back seat and they contacted OnStar to help locate the
vehicle, and they didn't. By the time they came around there was no need as
it was found by conventional means.

Like I said, give people a choice without the cost. If someone wants it,
plug it in.

You never know that, but most people dont really consider death as
impending.

We all, I think, buy a car thinking that it will last a long time, and that
then we
will still be there to have a new one...

I havent owned too many really stinker autos. Some have been really
remarkable,
and a few have been heartbreakers.

Engines can usually be fixed if they go bad. Some, like the notorious Iron
Duke,
could be replaced, but even the replacements were likely to go bad. Same
with
transmissions...there were some problematic ones, but even they could
normally
be replaced with a better unit or upgraded to where they were liveable.

What I think I see as a repeating problem of major concern, certainly not
limited to
GM, is problematic electrical systems. A lot of cars fall short in this
area where
user surveys, etc, are considered. And it seems when this is a problem,
repairs are
often not satisfactory.

Maybe engineers try to put too much bling in electronics, maybe the
components
are not good enough, or maybe the manufacturing is of low quality, but in
those
models where this is a problem, it seems that progress has been slow.

Maybe cars are not supposed to last forever, but I would expect 5-10 pretty
troublefree years out of them to be qualified as good or excellent in
dependability.

The warranty on the Honda Accord runs 5 years, 60,000 miles.

After this, the dealer sponsored lifetime warranty starts on motor and
transmission.
It is handled through an external insurance company, and is a "gift" from
the
dealership. Still, a bright move.

Bumper to bumper warranty after the factory sponsored one is an entirely
different
matter.
