Toyota is a little smarter. Happy employees don't strike. Happy
employees work better. Happy employees don't need a union. . . .

SMART employees don't need a union.
PRODUCTIVE employees don't need a union.
HONEST employees don't need a union.

If all "employers" were smart, intelligent, honest, fair, there would be
no need for a union. Trust me, this isn't the case. I've gone through
some really bad employers. It's amazing they managed to hang on to
their business. One of my employers was eventually murdered from
ripping off one of his employees. They caught the guy and he's spending
the next 20 years of his life in jail. Not all bosses are "good guys"
like you're implying. On the other hand, you're right about incompetent
employees.

To a point. Unions have good and bad.

At one point or another in my life, I've been a union member,
management, and a business owner.

I've heard unions described as "The anti-theft device for workers" <G>

Employers who honestly share success with employees can typically
enjoy not dealing with a union. Others who pay the upper management
10's of millions, even when the company is faltering, can't.

In the first case, a union will cost the employee money, create morale
problems as lazy Joe gets more benefits simply due to seniority, and
productivity and ingenuity are not rewarded.
In the second case, you can be the smartest, most productive and
honest worker in the world, and a union will benefit you.

And that employee may be held back from getting the raise he deserves
because the union negotiated the wages for him. There goes the incentive to
be the most productive.

Right!

BTW, I left out NOT between "will" and "benefit".

Employees that are not being treated well by their employer need to be
smart, productive and honest enough to find another job.

How many hundreds of thousands (or millions, or billions) of dollars does
the employee have on the line? How much risk is he taking, vs. the risk
taken by the employer
There were times that there were basically no other jobs to go to. You
obviously have no understaning of the years 1929-1939 in this country.

Who told you unions were no good? Your boss? Before unions, started by
the coal miners, the average working man worked six days a week, twelve
hours a day in horrid unsafe conditions, and received no benefits.

If a man was killed on the job, and many were, they took the body home a
laid it on the front porch. Do you think you would have, what you have
today, if it were not for unions and the REPUBLICAN President that forced
the mime owners like and J P Morgan and Getty to deal with the UAW?

When I first started working in the SF Regional office, the 15
warehousemen were union. One of them thought to ask what Toyota's
standard benefits were, and if they would get the same benefits as the
other employees in the office. They voted to de-unionize, and got full
healthcare benefits for themselves and their families, including vision
and dental without another deduction from their pay check, were
eligible for greatly discounted employee lease cars (including all
scheduled maintenance, insurance, and unlimited mileage) after 5 years,
got a pay raise on a par with the other non-union employees, got
employment anniversary gifts, more vacation and sick time, a 401K, and
all without having to pay union dues.

You have to be as dumb as a post to believe that a union is there to help
you. Sadly, most unionized workers are.

Think about what you said. We are completive in those products the can not
be "sent" offshore, like medical care and our natural recourses. Where we
are loosing are those job that can be "sent" offshore. Who is doing the
sending? The American consumer, almost nine out of ten of whom are not
union workers, who is willing to send his OWN job off shore to a foreign
company that offers even lower wages fewer benefits, that operates with far
less government regulations and environmental laws and pays no US federal
taxes, with whom their US employer must compete.

Forget about unions just make sure you kids can say.'Welcome to WalMart' or
'Do you want fries with that?' and you will be fine.

My own two eyes and my brain - i.e. body parts which within your body are
apparently ossified.

And without the mine owner they'd have worked zero days a week, zero hours
a day. Unless of course they could match the ambition and intelligence of
the mine owner and open a competing mine themselves. Or developed talents
to the point where they were overqualified for being coal miners.

What DO we have today? Let's take an inventory:

Practically no clothing made in the United States.

Zero consumer electronics made in the United States.

Fewer and fewer cars made in the United States, and the quality ones which
are made here are built in Right To Work states.
(Your forgot to say in my opinion)

You left out the family being told they had 24 hours to vacate the company-owned
house because the nam was no longer working for the company.
