As best as I can tell, they have come to the US legally, HAVE learned English (what second language can YOU speak well enough to integrate into another society?), and have a strong work ethic (another concept foreign - pardon the pun - to many union folk). What type of business was this? If it's still going on today with many workers who don't speak English, I can see how the dismissed workers were considered expendable. Not racism. integrate in to a society where everything is different. That's why they
are at the bottom of the food chain. If I went to India, I would expect
to have a job making low wages and slowly work my way up. Why are people
not going to India or Mexico looking for employment? It's because of low
wages, poor education, little or no health care. Now why is that? My
rant is driven by right wing wacko's like yourself trying to tell me that
the country would be better off without unions. If this were true,
unions would be extinct. Nobody's holding a gun to there heads telling
them they must certify. GWB, has destroyed your Country. You're in an
unwinnable war you can't withdraw from. The deficit has never been this
high, unemployment is rising and your dollar just fell another couple
cents to the Canadian dollar. And people like you will probably vote for
a right wing government again.

David Cole, a longtime industry consultant who leads the Center for
Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich. says one of most critical
challenges facing Chrysler's new owners is negotiating with the United
Auto Workers what he calls a "transformational labor contract" that
lifts from the company much of the $18 billion burden it carries now
for retiree health care.
Why should consumers care? Because restructuring the health-care burden
would free up capital for research and development, leading to better
technology and improved quality for future models, Mr. Cole says.
Perhaps transaction prices for Chrysler cars would go up, but the cars
would be better.
In theory, if Chrysler had another $500 to $1,000 to invest in each car
-- about what it spends on healthcare now -- it could offer more
standard safety equipment without drastically raising the sticker
price. In fact, offering more features while holding prices relatively
flat is another strategy Toyota has used to boost sales...

GM, Ford and Chrysler lost money in North America, the chief drag on
operations. Toyota, Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. made billions
of dollars in North America, helping bring up overall results.
Labor costs are a major reason for the financial difficulties at GM,
Ford and Chrysler, said Joe Phillippi, an auto analyst and principal
with AutoTrends Consulting in Short Hills, N.J.
The domestic and foreign automakers pay similar wages at their North
American plants, Phillippi said. The difference comes in the benefits,
which cost Detroit automakers twice as much as Toyota, he said.
Domestic automakers also have more retirees to support.
Chrysler will need UAW members to pay more of their health care costs
to save money and be competitive with Toyota, Phillippi said.
Cerberus could have more leverage in winning concessions, he said.
Private equity firms are known for taking brazen moves to cut costs.
"They don't have to answer to shareholders," Phillippi said. "They are
the shareholders. If it comes down to a point where they need to play
serious hardball, they can."
