Dear Tuckus Leker:

That's over the whole family. Dad owned the 72 Carina, then had the 77
Corolla 22 years, until almost the day he died. The Carina we drove 36,000
miles a year. All of these mileages are total vehicle miles. Many of these
were USED when we bought them. My sister owns 2 of them. and there are two
drivers at her house. My sister-in-law has sort of taken over the Previa.

Case in point: The 93 we bought in the fall of 1994 with 27,000 miles on
it, and just retired it in January. It was my sister's first car, I bought
it off her after the Chevy S-10 fiasco in 1999 at 72,000 miles. For a while
I was driving it a minimum of 90 miles a day. That's how it ended up with
238,000 miles.

So kiss the mistletoe, I wear it on my belt loop the same place Mayor Dailey
used to wear his!

OTOH, my run with Toyota has been:

1972 Carina 154,037 miles (sold)
1977 Corolla 207,000 miles (scrapped)
1979 KE30 (1501) Corolla 106,000 miles (sold)
1980 Corolla liftback (green) 75,000 miles (accident)
1980 Corolla liftback (red) 202,000 miles (sold)
1981 Corolla liftback 105,000 miles (sold)
1982 Corolla coupe 213,000 miles (sold)
1993 Corolla DX 238,000 miles (sold)
1994 Corolla LX 150,000 (Still running)
1995 Corolla LX 140,000 (Still running)
1995 Coroall plain 104,000 (just bought)
1995 Previa 156,000 miles (still running)

You call that a great run??? Clearly, you did not get the mileage out of
those cars since you show too much mileage in any one year for you to
amassed it. So - you've been replacing those Toyotas every year or two,
and
they've been "great cars"? You should switch to GM and discover what it's
like to own a vehicle for 10 years of faithful service.

If the price of fuel was really the only factor in ones buying decision,
Toyota would be selling more Corollas than Camrys and GM and Ford would not
be selling far more trucks than Toyotas sells Camrys. LOL

There are a lot more Corollas than Novas here where I live in the NE; a
'76, a couple '78s, and a '67 Japanese wagon.

I see them a lot more than I see similar vintage Novas.

Could be because the Vintage Novas are now worth $20,000- up. Especially
the SS models. They are investments now to be driven on sunny days. Lets
face it these cars were popular as hell when gas was cheap. When gas went
up people sacrificed and convinced themselves that it was OK to drive
boring ugly little cars with a blue map light. Now if gas were dirt cheap
again everyone who was not brainwashed would demanding a big v-8 or a 30
foot long car that floated down the road in luxury.

Dear Tuckus Leker:

I see you are doing the same thing to me that you're accusing me of doing.

You don't belive my experience at all.

You've earned a special spot on my blocked senders list, and I won't be
posting to the brainwashed GM group again.

I don't read posts from liberals, and people that call me a liar. Now go to
hell. Or to San Fag Cisco, which amounts to the same thing.

Charles of Schaumburg

PS I'm top posting this as a special favor to you so you can read it, since
you live in some sort of alternate reality where Toyotas rust and GM's
don't.

And I beat one of your GM mid 80 Chevy Caprice lead sleds with the 77
Corolla about a year before we drove it to the breaker's yard off the light
after the punk kids driving it started laughing at my dad's little old
Corolla. Actually we had some problem with rust after 21 years with that
car because it was repainted by an American after the deer hit it in 1990.
Still took 6 years to start rusting after that.

I went and looked at an HHR when I was in the market for a new car. I like
the old "pie wagons" from the 50's, and the HHR had good styling, gets
decent mileage, and, since I'm a bass player, PLENTY of room for the amps,
the PA, the speakers, etc. Looks, room, decent radio, what's not to like?

The engine. The only model I could find was the base HHR with the low end
4 cyl and a AT slushbox. Damn thing couldn't get out of it's own way! Even
flogging it on the on-ramp was a struggle!

Reminicent of the performance I got out of the Corvair, with the 80 hp
engine and Power-slide tranny. My S-10 in 1995 wasn't much better. My
sister's 95 Corolla could do LOTS better. Plus they put in 2-wheel ABS
which made stopping very tricky on slick roads. Typical General
Maintenance.

And the 93, when it was new, could get 39 mpg on the highway fairly
steadily. This new one finally hit 31 mpg the other day, doesn't have the
overdrive or the big engine.

I've had less trouble out of my 93 in the 7 years I drove it almost 150,000
miles than the S-10, 4 years and 50,000 miles.

I think the satisfaction gap is bigger. I have driven some decent S-10's.
We had one at CarQuest, the only problem was the tranny wouldn't kick in
properly. I would start the truck, put it in drive and hit the gas, and
then the tranny would kick and we were off to the races! It was a 4.3 so
it would chirp the tires real good! Other than that it was a decent truck,
and the shop next door (FINALLY) fixed the tranny after we got the right
parts.

Then I had one come in at the dealer. Thing was kinda beat bodywise, the
owner did some repair and then painted it with Krylon. Was a 2.8 5-speed,
with a LONG bed! (Full 8 foot!) Gooney looking thing, but ran like a top.
I had just decided to keep it for myself when a guy came in waving cash.

That was 4 years ago. He works at Sumitomo a block from me, and STILL has
the truck, still runs great, still looks horrible.

The only thing is, I am a BIG guy and the cabs in the S-10s are made for
midgets...

I'm not exactly a big guy, and the current body iteration, which came out in
1995, I kept bumping my head on the back glass when I hit bumps cause I had
to drive with the seat that far back. I'm only 5-10.

Again, I could have bought the identical truck with the identical options
from GMC and had the privilege of paying 1,000 more for it. If they're
still running with the same engine sets they had in 1995, they're not very
good. They had the 2.2 4 that had a wierd torque curve. Then they had the
4.3 that only put out a measly 40 more horsepower than the 4 and weighed so
much more that the overall performace was actually WORSE. Then they had
some sort of boosted 4.3 that put out about another 40 horses, but you had
to pay almost twice as much for that one, since it only came in the extended
cab and with a lot of gegaws.

Typical stupid GM thinking. Lowball Toyota, but then require the buyer to
actually pay a lot more to get something decent and get a lot of things they
may not want.

| SAAAAAAAAAME HERE!
|
| I would have loved to save money and purchased a Ranger, S-10, or
| Colorado over my current and previous Tacomas and "Pickups".
|
| Unfortunately, there's a satisfaction and quality gap much wider than
| the price difference. My current '05 Tacoma is as close to a perfect
| vehicle as I've ever had. The sad part is that I never even
| considered a Dakota 'till after the fact, because I forgot they even
| existed! I checked one out, and I didn't miss anything.

I'd look at domestic first, if I were in the marked for a largish vehicle.
Most people I know with them seem very happy with everything except gas
mileage. But I wouldn't rule out Toyotas either.
|
| I still own a Wrangler Sport (which is actually total crap,
| quality-wise), because there is nothing else like the only "real"
| Jeep. One of the most important saving graces for the Wrangler is the
| huge aftermarket. As parts fall off, you can get much better, cheaper
| aftermarket replacements. Don't get me going on the 4 door new
| version... Power locks and windows, on a JEEP? = 8^(

"As parts fall off"? LOL. That's pretty sad.

I always liked the look of the old Jeep, and it's amazing how many of them
are still on the road.

Natalie

If I were in the market for a Jeep, I'd want something more like the old
CJ-2's and 3's. Those things you couldn't kill.

The Japanese attacking us apparently doesn't mean much to some either.

Are you talking about the successful economics of modern day Japan, or
their
day of infamy in 1941?

We gave them a heck of a defeat back then. It wasnt brag, just fact.

If we want to win economically, it will again have to be no brag, just
fact.

Well it looks like another war is on, all traitors will be rewarded with
a
brand new Toyota.

Where do I sign up?

Really. Bet Mr 80Knight owned a VW Beetle in his past, too.

The Brainwashed over in the GM forum don't get it. Why people bought Model
T's in the early 1920's, VW's in the 60's and started buying Toyotas in the
1970's is something GM and its cohorts will never understand. We celebrate
the absence of fancy options. WE DON'T WANT THEM. We want a basic
machine that will get up, go and keep going.

GM has always had a structure where you often had to get certain options
packages to get stuff you wanted, but you got stuff you didn't want, too.
For instance, when I bought my S-10 in 1995, I wanted a 5 speed, so I had to
get the 2.2 engine and the short cab. Had I wanted the 4.3 engine, I would
have had to get the longer cab and an auto tranny, which added so much
weight that the performance was actually worse than my little 2.2. And in
order to get the 4.3 that actually had any get up and go, I would have had
to pay over 20,000, when the base S-10 with the 5 speed actually cost just
over 10,000. We had similar problems trying to buy a new Chevy in 1973, so
GM is still practicing its same old tricks.

Charles,

All the picture books I got that have 66 Chevelle SS's in them do not
show them with "SS" badges on the sides of the vehicle. The crossed flag
badge is on the tip of the front fender. These is a Super Sport script
on the rear quarter panels and an SS badge on the grille.

I don't doubt a 4 door Chevelle could of been ordered with a 396 V8. But
Chevy didn't build an SS 4 door to sell to the general public. Some
Chicagoland dealers in the 60's did modifications to cars to lure people
into buying them. Grand Spaulding Dodge was one of them. They would take
a Dart GTS stuff a 440 V8 in it and put GSS badges on it In reference to
Grand Spaulding Special.

An Olds dealer near me put stripes & decals on Cutlass's the last year
of the RWD coupe and put JTO badges on the front fenders...ooo! Look at
that.. Whats a JTO Cutlass? JTO were the dealer initial's. haha very
funny.

Perhaps your 4 door SS was a dealership special? Back in 1982 A kid on
our street had the only 1973 Impala SS 4-door , thanks in parts to the
mirrored finish letters he bought at the auto part store.

Also your reference to Mayor Dailey was wrong - its Daley.

Sounds like your family got high miles out of their Toyota's. A Jewsih
lawyer I know had many Corolla's. A 92 had 253,000 when the transmission
died on a trip to Allentown, PA. He had it towed in. They quoted
$2600.00 to repair it, he declined to pay that much money due to the
high mileage but instead bought a new 2001 Corolla on the spot then
droveit back to Chicago. The 01 he traded in in 2006 with 155,000 miles
for a 2006 Corolla.

Happy Motoring

Before that was the Cavalier, that was hit or miss depending on who was
in charge of the particular model year's production.

And before that...er, it was a Toyota Corolla Sprinter. Even then they
STILL couldn't sell the damn things!!!

I think most of it comes from brainwashing. People were pissed at
American
cars because of bad gas mileage so foreign cars came to the rescue at
just
the right time. The cars were cheap and cheaply made but they got great
gas mileage. Nothing fancy about them just 4 wheels a little and a box,
not much to break, most didnt even have any power accessories such as
power windows. So Americans lapped it up with the "Their ice is colder"
mentality. So the Japanese established a foot hole developed a following
and also took advantage of union free labor and trade policies which
allowed larger profits from each sale to build newer modern factories.
Detroit was tied up with Union wages and high pensions etc, japanese
tariffs would not allow American cars to be shipped to Japan which also
added to the one sidedness politics.

It matter to me not one whit what Detroit has to go through to biuld cars.
A lot of the cars coming out of Detroit when I was coming up were just
plain old CRAP, period. After living two years with a Corona when it came
time for me to buy a car there were two choices: a used Celica or a new
Corolla. The Celica had frame damage from an accident.

And over the years, as my income increased, my Toyotas got better and more
amenities. And not a single one has proven to be a bad car.

There are Chevy guys, there are Ford guys, and there are Toyota guys.
It's going to take Detroit thinking more about their *CUSTOMERS* than
their Shareholders to get me to buy another US made car. The only one I
would consider now is a Chrysler, but they're even uglier than Nissans.

You win some and you lose some, my mother had an 82 Toyota Camary that was
nothing but problems. She got fed up with it and sold it to her mechanic
with less than 80k miles on it. God knows I am not a marketer for GM or
other US autos, but my experiences as well as other family members have had
no problems with the products. I have owned several chrysler, 1 ford and 1
GM.
