Default 1990 Honda hatchback civic stall question - 08-01-2003 , 10:56 AM

A friends daughter has a 1990 Honda Civic(1500 engine with PGM-FI)
, manual tranny, with a little over 100K miles. The timing belt and
O2 sensor have been changed, and the ECM shows no error codes.
On take off, or changing from 1st to 2nd the car sometimes feels
like there is a bit of stall or hesitation. Runs great otherwise,
but the kid is a little concerned. If there is a "real" problem,
I can not get the car to misbehave for me, I suspect the ignitor is
going flaky. I suspect that as a new driver she is just not giving
opening the throttle enough.
Any thoughts on what could cause this symptom and how to check it?
Thanks Terry

Go for a ride with her and see how she shifts.

Terry,
Try driving it on a straight stretch of city road (or parking lot) in
first gear. Go as slow as possible, then a bit faster until you hit the
same RPM you would be doing while cruising in top gear on the highway.
If it starts sputtering / lurching at that speed, try unplugging the TPS
and see if it goes away. You may find the answer.
