Default goo gone and 3m adhesive remover (may) - 05-16-2004 , 01:32 AM

hi,

are products such as goo gone and 3m adhesive remover safe to use
on the paint of the car?

after removing a sticker from the back of the car, i noticed that an
outline of the sticker and residue remained and was more uglier than
the sticker.

in order to remove the residue, are either goo gone and 3m adhesive
remover
safe to use? i don't want to unnecessarily scrape paint off.

I can't say with 100% certainty that goo gone is safe to use (I may just
be a dumbass who got lucky), but I've used it to remove sticky stuff
from the car. I'm very careful not to rub too hard and have water
available to immediately water down the spot I used the goo gone on.
Very gentle rub action.

There are basically two kinds of adhesive: Water soluble and oil soluble.

Try these two solvents: Rubbing alcohol and light machine oil (3-in-1) or
WD-40.

If the glue won't come off with one, it'll come off with the other. Might
have to let it soak for a bit either way.

Another thing to try is auto body cleaning solvent, the sort of stuff you'd
use to make certain all the residue is off the paint before repainting.
Dominion Sure Seal makes a product called Sure Solv, which is extremely
effective at this sort of thing.

One of the best "solvents" for that kind of thing is gasoline - nothing in
it that can do fast damage to your paint, so just dry it off afterwards and
rewax if desired.

One of the best adhesive removers I have used is WS-40.
Does not effect most surfaces.

Lets try that again. That is WD-40.
Perhaps I need a bit on my 3rd finger joint.
