Actually in my area there was a big to-do about the dealers wanting to
hire those type of people for oil changes to avoid paying the journeyman
union mechanics their normal rate. The mechanics went on strike, and the
dealers capitulated.

I do change it myself, because it's faster than driving somewhere and
waiting to get it done. Besides being much cheaper. Also, I can let all
the oil drain out while doing other things like washing the vehicle.
Shops can't leave the car on the lift for an hour while the dregs of oil
drip out.

And what do you do with the waste oil and the used filter?

The garbage company picks both up with the recycling. No extra charge.
They want to keep the oil from being poured down storm drains and ending
up in San Francisco Bay.

The Toyota dealers routinely have $30 oil change specials,

My local Honda dealer (Phoenix AZ) charges $30 as a regular price. My
guess is that they hope for the extra repair jobs that they might
uncover. Or maybe even an occasional car sale. The waiting room and
sales floor are in the same room.

Yeah, there's big money in repairing the mistakes of Jiffy Lube.

I imagine that the dealers use the same 'quality' type people to
change the oil as Jiffy Lube does. The difference might be that any
mistakes could be fixed on the spot with less hassle.

Why is Honda in the subject line? Honda very specifically and emphatically
prohibits any sorts of "flushes" on any systems on their cars.

If your local dealer is pushing "flushes", then they are doing this in
direct violation of Honda policy. The dealer is NOT "Honda".

On the TV news segment last night the undercover team used a Honda. They
kept asking the Jiffy Lube employee if the engine flush was required,
and they were told that Honda required it every x miles.

They "kept asking"? That sounds bad. It sounds like what they call a
"sting" when the cops do it. Goading the alleged bad guys into doing
something worthy of getting strung up by the nuts for.

Unions have been doing that sort of thing for years. Imagine, full
mechanics wages for an oil changer. Too bad. As the dealers are
currently going broke I wonder if they'll go on strike for better
unemployment wages...

My god, how stupid. They should be more like our county's garbage pickup.

Our county refuses to accept motor oil, and has just two Hazmat days per
year when you can legally give it up. This encourages motorists to dump
jugs of their used oil in the ditches of the country roads I walk upon.
This is far more environmentally friendly than accepting it for pickup.

It MUST be environmentally friendly, otherwise why would they have such a
policy? My county is run by Canada's most zealous environuts; they
certainly know what they are doing.

No sting at all. The Jiffy Lubes etc. hard sell these various flushes when
you go in for just an oil and filter change. The "customers" kept asking if
it was really recommended and the employees lie their asses off saying that
it is recommended or even required.

No, they "kept asking" at different Jiffy Lube locations. When the Jiffy
Lube sales person tried to sell the engine flush, the customer would ask
if the service was in the Honda maintenance schedule, and the Jiffy Lube
sales person would lie and say that it was.
