Default Oil light comes on randomly - 05-01-2009 , 04:22 PM

I have a 91 honda accord lx, and the oil pressure light comes on
occasionally.
The oil level in the car is fine. It comes on a random times, once
right after starting, once after highway driving for 2 hours, and
occasionally driving around town. If I turn off the car and turn it
back on it goes away. It seems to happen more now that it is warmer
out (it handly happened over the winter)

I replaced the oil pressure sensor, but it still happens. Any ideas?
Is this a real issue or just a anomoly?

Thanks!

what grade of oil?
when was it changed?
when was the filter changed?
how many miles on the engine?
have you checked the wiring?
what is your climate?
what do you know about the history of the car?

What you describe is likely to be an electrical problem of some sort.

Are you absolutely sure the contacts are connected properly at the sensor?
Is the black rubber boot still on the connector? It might be best to cut
the now-hardened boot off (carefully!) and simply plug the bare contacts
onto the sensor individually, and make sure they're not loose.

if it's electrical, it'll be the wire earthing somewhere - like broken
insulation touching the engine or something like that.

Don't rule out a failing oil pump. Though with mom and pop drivers it
seems to be rare, with the mostly younger people at honda-tech.com it
seems much more common.

Mobil 1 full syntheic oil (I've been using this for about 3-4 years)
just changed with oem filter. It happen before and after changing
200000miles on engine/car
Climate is pacific norhtwest.
nothing special related to this or the history of the car. Always had
regular oil changes.
How do you check the eletrical for this. I'm pretty sure I have the
sensor plugged in right, but I'll check. It happened before I changed
the sensor also. I haven't had eletrical problems but I'll try to
look for a ground short.
We are pretty conservative drivers. If it was the oil pump, would it
be so random like that. I would have expected that to be more
consistant.

randomness makes it much more likely to be an electrical issue. since
you've changed the switch, you know where the lead goes. just follow it
back and make sure it's not mis-routed or snagging on anything. check
thoroughly for the condition of the insulation.
