Default Indy was a good race - 05-29-2006 , 07:58 PM

...this coming from me...a long time Cartisan, but there is one thing
that still really bugs me about Indycars...and that is the sound of
the engines. Just don't like it.

Never Forget!!!

It proved that it doesn't take good drivers to make a good race. Even
if it was only a four lap race.

It would have been better if the field of 33 would have had better
drivers rather than maybe as many as 8 contenders. The rest of the 25
field fillers consisted of wanna-be's, has-beens, a couple of lucky rich
boys and some that never-weres. But at this declined stage of the Indy
500, it didn't matter much who ran. Few actually paid attention to the
race.

Obviously you missed the other 196 laps. This years race was surprisingly
good.
Including some very funny commercials.

Name the best drivers in the 19 car field for Champ Car! :-) Ummm, how
many are fillers here? Wow, 19 cars in a race, awesome!

Oh yeah, those are household names, better drivers. :-)

Sam Hornish a household name? Dan Wheldon?

Arguably, the ONLY household name in the race was Danica.

You want household names, you have to go to NASCAR. They seem to have
the advantage in today's U.S. auto racing.

How many cars are in a typical IRL race. The indy field was filled to
33 by TG's money. He paid for alcoholics and never was drivers to fill
the field.

33 cars? Most drivers were jokes incapable of qualifying under normal
circumstances. But there haven't been normal circumstances for 12 races.

Will Power finished ninth? See, now they're just making names up to
make it look like they have competitors.

We will savor the May whine well into June.

Given that finish, and the great racing all day long,
the 2006 vintage may continue for decades.

Absolutely incredible race. Of course, this is only
what I've heard from the folks who were there.

TV viewers, YMMV. I haven't seen the recording (but
you missed a really good race.)

I realize there aren't many folks watching but I understand
that the 19 drivers listed are those that have competed in
a race this season. I believe there were 17 cars at the
last couple of races.

Indy Pro Series - 19 cars at IMS - dead series

OWRS - 17 cars - alive and well

Go figure.

Is this any different than what nascar puts on the track? Or any other
form of racing for that matter.

Although the yellow was a real caution and not a debris yellow, the
length of the caution reminded me of a Nascar finish.

Not to diminish Marco's obvious talent, but it was very telling of the
depth of the field when a rookie was challenging for the win and a
retired driver finishes third.
