Default Japan race - 09-19-2009 , 04:09 PM

A decenty good clean race.

there are a lot of complaints people make about the IRL but the actual races
are pretty good watching.

(One of fairly few I've watched this year)

I'm glad, and will totally accept, that you felt it was
a good race.
I felt the race overall was kind'a "ehhhh?"
Ryan Briscoe, and how he handled the pressure of having
a good lead in the championship, ,
was to me quite interesting.

I agree that it was somewhat on the "ehhh" side. But I wonder if my
impression of the race was slanted by a couple of my favorites being
stuck at the back and not making much progress.

Still a good race, though, just not up to IRL's traditions. I think
they've been struggling since the merger, trying to get some harmony
between the styles of the two series. I give them a lot of credit for
taking aggressive action after the Richmond parade.

Briscoe's only goof - and it was a big one - was goosing it too hard
when Penske told him to get a move on leaving the pits. So is that
his fault, or is it to be expected these days when drivers are trained
listen to their earpiece instead of thinking for themselves?

Snoozefest? Traditions of mediocrity? They live up to those
standards everyday of their pathetic existence. You on the other hand
continue your own tradition of providing excuses and equovications for
all things IRL.

There was a race?

Seriously, I am a DirecTv viewer and for me -- there was no race. It
is kind of sad, but at the same time it smacks of the kind of
ignorance and arrogance that comes from the Indy braintrust. To sign a
ten year deal with a network that willingly loses 18 million viewers
is pure series suicide.

TGfTG and we're glad he is gone.

It wasn't so willing, and they're trying to get back on DirectTV. IRL
press release on Friday:

"As announced earlier in the week, there will be comprehensive
coverage of practice, qualifying and the race on IndyCar.com. We could
not be happier with the partnership we have forged in just over a year
with VERSUS and look forward to a long and healthy relationship. Both
VERSUS and the IndyCar Series share the frustration of DirecTV
subscribers and we are hopeful that the two sides will continue talks
and that DirecTV subscribers will have the ability to view IndyCar
Series coverage for the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway."

Somewhat related press release from Versus also on Friday:

"VERSUS today announced a multi-year deal with NASCAR to air a
fast-paced, up-close HD look at the 12 drivers competing in NASCAR’s
10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup. The weekly, half-hour series titled
Quest for the NASCAR Sprint Cup will air on VERSUS on Tuesday nights
at 11 p.m. ET, beginning September 22, and will air each week until
the conclusion of the 2009 NASCAR playoff season."

So NASCAR has also hooked up with the same network...without Tony
George or his usurpers negotiating. It will be interesting to see
whether having NASCAR in the mix will tip things toward an agreement..

Whatever the outcome this year, I have actually enjoyed the coverage.
The difference from ESPN/ABC has been refreshing. VS has had clean
shows with no trace of ESPNs trademarked over-produced shows.

Having said that, it still shows that they are trying to turn a buck
in this poor economy instead of trying to grow the brand. I still
think it will be a long term fiasco to partner with a network that
only gets shows that no one else wants. The new NASCAR fluff show is
just money in the France's pockets and is not real racing broadcasts
that NASCAR depends on unlike the IRL. Hopefully NASCAR will force the
hand of either VS or DirecTV to come to an agreement before next
season. The IRL season is for all intents, constructions, and purposes
already over for this year.

I've definitely enjoyed the Versus coverage. It's really good seeing
Bob Jenkins in the booth. I also enjoy the commitment to stay til the
end, and always include a reasonable amount of post-race coverage.

I think both IRL and Versus are trying to grow. IRL has to be looking
toward the future with this deal, in addition to their satisfaction
with telling ESPN to stuff it. The NASCAR show may be fluff, but I
see it as evidence of Versus trying to stir up demand for their
channel.

Just one more IRL race this season, and it's an oval. I'm looking
forward to it. I'll be happy to record it for you.

There are always bit torrents out there somewhere online. I suppose some
one recorded it you can probably find the IndyCar race online somewhere.

I too felt it was kinda "ehhh"... then again, I'm never impressed by
that race.... I'm not sure what it is, but it always looks weird to
me... might be the extremely wide track, or the long sight-lines from
the cameras, or the fact that (as mentioned during the broadcast) there
never really gets to be a second line since it is only used one week a
year...

With a great amount of width, you'd expect some more high/low stuff, but
since they can't do much side-by-side in the corners, it got a bit dull...

BTW--I do agree that Ryan's incident was an interesting event...
though, I don't understand how he was able to go back to the front after
having taken to the pit-lane again... (in the end it didn't matter as
he fell back so far due to the damage...)
