He proposed an all oval series with all American short dirt track drivers with no engine leases and no road or street courses, but ended up showing all he really wanted was to be in control of a former racing series, destroying modern open wheel racing in America in the process? The really sad thing is just that type of series could have worked if it had been handled differently and starting with an Indy Pro Series first. Using a common chassis that could accept the engines for either series and ADDING another race at Indy you could have effectively accomplished what he set out to do without driving that wedge through the fan base. IRL say runs 13 all oval races, their Indy race and the cars would be easily able to use either the engines used in Champ Car, or run the same engine that you have used all year. Engines from both series would be legal Memorial Day weekend. The second race say the IRL engine only could be used. NO 25 8. Nuff said. Let the fastest 33 get in where ever they come from. Rest go home, just as it always had been. Let them compete against each other and guess what. Sometimes competition makes everyone better. I am old enough to remember most of the Super Bowls. As a Johnny U fan, I remember how disappointed I was to see the Colts lose then. But that game may have done as much to make the NFL what it is today than any single event. That same thing could have happened with open wheel racing had growth not control been the chief objective. Too late now though. The damage has been done and no quick fix now exists. |
