Default MotoGP at Indy - 03-07-2007 , 01:54 PM

Well, I've been reading more and more talk on the net about MotoGP
coming to
Indy. Today even Curt Cavin takes a guess and says he thinks it's safe to
pencil
in MotoGP at Indy late August 2008.

I would hope they would bring in AMA Superbike like they do in
California.

Those MotoGP races are awesome. AMA Superbike is pretty darn cool too.

The MotoGP event would not take place on the current road course layout
for safety concerns regarding the banked final turn. The reports
indicate that a new layout would be designed that makes use of the
current infield part of the circuit. It would also likely run
counter-clockwise, which would carry over to the F1 race should they
return. Interesting developments, but it looks like the circuit layout
will still suck. At least the bikes should be able to put on an
entertaining show.

Yikes. Going counterclockwise into oval T1 with no runoff in an F1
car doesn't sound like a good idea.

The F1 circuit isn't Spa or Suzuka, but it isn't awful by modern
standards. It would be nice if it had more fast curves. The biggest
problem is that there aren't any elevation changes on the property.

My impression was that they were going to not use any of the banked oval
turns.(?)

That's what it sounds like - not using the banked oval turn. And then
F1 will run the same course the same way at MotoGP.

Yes, the Indy F1 track is not great but it doesn't produce the 100% snooze
fests that
most of the other tracks do. Hopefully running in reverse will not take
away the interesting races. With talk from Indy of F1 running in on the
track in the opposite way I'm starting to think the speedway is planning on
having F1 back after 2007.

Anyway, I wonder how large the attendance would be at Indy for a MotoGP
and AMA Superbike race. I assume MotoGP and AMA Superbike would give their
right arm to race at Indy.

Sounds like the start of a big opportunity for Tony George. He could
claim that the MotoGP traditions of Indy need to be preserved and he
could start the IML (Indy Moto League). This would help get the
American heroes of the short track into big time racing and lower the
costs of team operation.

And the result would be the death of MotoGP the same way the formation
of the IRL has resulted in the quick death of open wheel racing.

That would be a shame. Accelerating clockwise through the banked
turn, legging it down the long straight, then braking hard to turn
into the infield (with lots of runoff room at the north end of the
long straight if you get it wrong) is the most distinctive part of the
F1 track. Losing that is a trip to Tilkeville.
