So you see Montoya's interlude in the 500 as an conqueror rather than
a participant?

Yes. *Much like Jim Clark.

Absolutely nothing negative about either of them for that role. *In
fact, it's a huge accomplishment to beat others at their own game.
But I wouldn't call Montoya an IRL star any more than I'd call Clark a
USAC star.

Same thing with Foyt and Andretti and NASCAR. *They both won NASCAR's
(supposed) biggest race, but I don't think anyone ever touted either
as a NASCAR star.

I always saw Montoya and Tracy's venture into the 500 as the start of
some kind of unification. After the Tracy yellow flag debacle, it
seemed like that was off the table. I thought Foyt and Andretti were
better received in Daytona as they brought respectability to NASCAR.

Jim Clark and Chapman were all about a conquering army of crazed, mid-
engined Euros crossing the pond on a mission of destruction for our
roadster based society ;-)

Montoya was more of an invader. The friendly way that he and Ganassi
were received, though, set a very good tone for the ultimate
reunification.

When Tracy ran, Penske had already moved to IRL and a couple of the
other big teams had already moved or were in the process. Tracy was
part of the transfer...might have gone smoother if he had won and
decided to stay. I think the ultimate style of unification - victory
and anhilation - would have been the same.

So Tony George and the Brickyard 400 are NOT the sole reason NASCAR
hit it so big? ;-)

Yes, but don't forget who talked them into doing it. Our very own All
American boy Dan Gurney.
