One of the other posters was knocking NASCAR's long season,
but I've always wondered if that wasn't another reason *for* its
popularity? How hard is it to get into a sport that doesn't have
weekly events, and has less than 20 events a year?

No, the reason for NASCAR's popularity is fans identifying with the
drivers.

Carey in Manvel

And CCWS fans are overwhelmingly concerned with the placement of the gearbox
for some unfathomable reason.

Maybe they care more for the "motor" part of motor racing....instead
of the soap opera atmosphere and the rubbin` the masses cherish in
stock car racin`.
No wonder most of us like F1 too and most `mericans concider them
remote controlled gizmos.

The F1 folks got even with us Americans in 2005 and we still have not
forgiven them for that.

The local TV stations here harp on the local NFL team 12 months out
of a year..rain or shine. They even have a weekly show to themselves.
So it most be more than just about the amount of events.
Same thing here in the SF Bay Area, but they have two teams

It is certainly a large part. I talk to people in the office who watch every
race and time after time they say the races are boring but they keep going
back

Well that will happen, but only for a while unless they are long time
fans which tend to be much more patient. Nascar better get ready for
the foreign drivers. They are coming. The money is getting competitive
enough for them to think about it. How long do you think it will be
before Toyota throws a Japanese driver in a seat? Id give it no more
than year 2 and all those Sato fans can be lined up at the track.
Within 5 years Honda will be in Nascar and you can then count on a
Nascar race at Motegi. How bout good ole Shiggy? Would he run Nascar?
Wally Dallenbach Sr. pulled his ticket to run champ cars so he went to
the IRL. You then could have the Japanese drivers hook up in the draft
with Juan Montoya pushing them. Maybe even the King (and I don't mean
Richard Petty here) will bring the Panasonic sponsorship to Nascar and
drive himself. They are talking about Montreal so there is a spot for
Ville. Mexico means Michael Jordain Jr or Mario D to fill the stands.
Hmm Wonder if there will be anyone left from NC left? One thing is for
sure. The days of the Alabama gang are long gone.

Teams will be faced in many ways with many of the same questions Cart
owners faced. Do you want to win, or do you want to market?

Of course. It's classic supply and demand to a great degree. NASCAR
can run races 52 weeks out of the year if they want but if network TV
only shows 15 then who really cares? Right now they have it made
with their popularity and the TV networks falling all over themselves
trying to gain rights.

Again, we can only thank TG for helping NASCAR all the way to the
bank. His grandfather would be quite proud.

If I were Tony (and I'm glad I'm not for many reasons) I would
seriously want to assess what my legacy will be noted for having run
the place for many years now. We can argue here until our keyboards
fry but, IMO (yes folks, it's a NG and it's MY opinion) his legacy at
THIS point in time is that he, more than any other, is responsible for
the demise of top end open wheel racing in this country.

Mike

Sure, why not? It surely can't be about the racing since it's so
contrived.

Actually, they've already done that, twice at least. The races
were non-points paying "exhibitions," but they were full fields and
full length. There was also an Australian exhibition race once.
