Default Indy Photo-Ops - 03-05-2007 , 08:55 AM

I grew up in Indianapolis and I spent a lot of time at the track when I was
a teen and young man. My job finally caused me to move to the east coast
and now, I only get back to Indianapolis every few years. This year looks
like it is going to be one where I can go. I'll be there for the first full
week of practice and qualifications.

I used to know one of the firemen that worked at the track and he would get
me inside the fense where I could take good pictures of the action. Some
of my happiest days were spent standing on the inside of turn 2 (until they
built the road course) and turn 3. He has since retired and without a
connection to some news publication, it's not possible that I can get any
access on my own. I'll have my bronze badge that will get me into the
garage area. If anyone has any tips or suggestions on places where you can
get unobstructed photos, please let me know.

Thanks!

Better check the schedule. The Indy 500 isn't what it used to be before
the Tony George ego split. It has diminished significantly and there
isn't much going on there in May.

There won't be a lot of people there obstructing your view, that's for
sure.

Just raise your right arm and say "All Hail Tony George" and the
security guys will let you go anywhere

Have you considered getting a life?

I've got a great one. Too bad you're stuck in the 60s.

Ignore the replies from the bitter people here (even though I'm one of
them:-)

As you have a garage badge I assume you'll have pretty good photo
access there as is. Standing along the 'whistle line' from Gasoline
Alley to the pits is probably a good spot as well. I would think
you'd have the place mostly to yourself on the practice days.

If you are asking for shots of cars at speed I'm not as sure where
good spots are-or if you can get to them readily. I'll let others
answer that. Good luck and enjoy.

Mike

In years past I would go to grandstand G entering turn 2. I would
stick my camera lens through the fencing and get some very nice
pictures of the cars coming at me through the short chute at speed.
The yellow shirts (security) may or may not ask you to leave. It's
worth a try.

I certainly do. I got an uncomfortable number in the first lottery.
But fortunately Arnie Knepper's wife (secretary of the draft board)
helps several of us (legally). Gave us a chance to set our own
timetable and service options. Great lady. Married to a fine gentleman.
