Michael Andretti -"Tony (George) wants the IRL to thrive and we've got to
get on road courses."

Eddie Cheever - "I hope it's Long Beach." (Apparently Cheever considers
street courses to be road courses.)

A.J. Foyt - "I'm against it to be honest with you. The IRL was formed to run
ovals, it's an all-oval series. I know they want to go to so many more
tracks and it's just gonna cost the guys more money. We probably wouldn't
file an entry on road course races. If we get run off, we'd probably go to
NASCAR."

FTR, I think they can run the color schemes. I know I've seen it done
before.

If what I heard is correct, I'm a little surprised Player's will be
cutting off all funding as of 10/1/03 with three events still scheduled.
Doesn't Players own a portion of the team?

No CART fan is going to appreciate the "favor" of you
guys coming to Long Beach or any other CART venue for that matter.

Long Beach is an event more than it is a race. I would say at least 80% of
the attendee's could not distinguish between a CART car and an IRL Car. They
are there to be seen. Most care more about the celebrity race than the
actual CART race. The crowds would be there no matter what type of racing
it is.

Your not from SoCal are you?
Did it matter when it went from F5000 to F1?

Did it matter when it went from F1 to CART?

It doesn't matter who runs or where "your" from,
the comment was on target.

Your statement presumes that CART will die. Haven't we been over this
before? Another presumption is that the CART fans will somehow (be
forced
to?) become IRL fans. Sorry Charlie, it ain't gonna happen. A
crapwagon
is
a crapwagon, and we ain't fans of 'em.

I never meant to imply that the CART fans were going to become IRL fans.
Whatever gave you that idea?

See Paul Tracy quote on street races.

Street races are a strange beast. They draw a capacity crowd yet look like
rubbish on TV. Too narrow and not nearly enough passing. And what little
passing does occur is generally uncontested. And you can only see so many
90 degee turns even if half of them are right handers.

Rubbish, California Speedway. The IRL can't draw enough fans to pay for
sweeping the parking lot. Stick to your couple of goober tracks that
make a profit.

Hmmm, you may have a notion there. Perhaps IRL should stay at Richmond and
Michigan and the Eastern tracks. Let CART schedule races in Canada and
Mexico and all the California venues they can get plus Portland. Most
everybody races in Florida so that cannot be helped. And only the big three
race at IMS. Just divvy up the continent.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of the IRL now, nor will I ever be. If CART
ceases to exist, I'll follow ALMS or something else. I'm not simply
going to switch over to a "league" I detest. I believe open wheel will
suffer greatly at the demise of CART. The IRL may gain some fans, but
the sport of open wheel racing in general will pay a huge price.

Long Beach and Toronto will not hurt anything. Easy money. $150,000 for
kit
and $100,000 to hire a specialist. Than is about 6 million for all 24
teams. They will more than make that back at those two venues. With CART
extinct there will be many times 6 million in sponsorships to be had with
no
effort at all. It is all good.
Except for the fact that Americans don't like road course or street course
racing and no one will support it. That is what you believe, right
cfswestern? Where will the money come from if there's no support?

Suits me. As a Californian, I'd be perfectly happy with CART being open
wheel west, and leaving the IRL to the east. Then they should have a
big east/west shootout once a year...but NOT at Indy!
