No way TG isn't involved in this. No way.

I love how OWRS rewrites history. Did CART even call themselves Champ Car
back in 81?

Championship Car World Series
Championship Auto Racing Teams

I guess that's close enough for them. They were racing 'Championship
Cars' in CART.

But were they calling them "Champ Cars"? Back in 81, that was the common
name for the Silver Crown cars. As I recall, CART didn't start using the
Champ Car moniker until they could no longer use Indy car.

Since this was a piece written by Yahoo!, most unbiased individuals
would consider the mistake to be attributed to the unknown writer, not
the Series Formerly Known As CART.

I remember the term "Champ Car" being used long before the split. I don't
remember if it was used way back in the USAC days.

Plenty of "champ car" news, although it begins to wane as the 90`s
approach, and the term indy cars get more headlines.
Blame it on CART..lol

It pre-dates the split. It fell out of fashion with the Indy cars with the
real split, between the Gold and Silver Crown series. The Silver Crown cars
were always (and still are) called champ cars. Well, until USAC screwed up
the pavement cars this year.

I recall drivers calling them exactly that going way back before they gave
up the IndyCar moniker. I heard AJ Foyt call the ChampCars back in the 80s.

The drivers clearly considered ChampCar or IndyCar the top rung in their
careers. These names were interchangeable.

You, Ken, and the other Earlers seem to be the only people obsessed with
this issue.

It's really CART/OWRS/Champcar/Kalkhovencar that's obsessed with it.

They've been called Champ cars for as long as I can remember -
probably longer. AAA was just a little before my time, but USAC
called the series the Championship Trail.

The C in CART was because CART wanted to lay claim to the heritage.
Everyone got off it a bit with the Indycar[TM] deal. IMHO, K-car's
use of the Champcar name and resurrection of Vanderbilt Cup shows a
hell of a lot more brains than that year CART put out an all-time
record book that went back only to 1979.

I'm not saying that K-car is entitled or not entitled to the name.
But they do understand the heritage and value.
