WDW was built at at time when it seemed that CART did not want any

CART had 6 oval races in 1995.

In 1996, Homestead, the US 500 (second MIS date), and Rio replaced
Phoenix, Loudon, and Indy. Milwaukee, Nazareth, and the original MIS
date were the carryovers. (Presumably at least eight oval races in
CART w/o the IRL.)

In 1997, they added Gateway and Fontana, and lost the second MIS race.
(7; could be at least 9)

In 1998, they added Motegi , and lost none. (8; could be at least 10)

In 2000, they added Chicago. (9; could be at least 11)

In 2001, they added EuroSpeedway and Rockingham, and lost Rio. (I
recall that they also attempted an oval race somewhere in the
southwest...) (10; could be at least 12)

It "seemed" you're confusing disinterest in board tracks and riding
mechanics with disinterest in oval racing.

A couple of years before that they were down to five.

Was the increase in ovals something CART would have done anyway, or
was it a response to competition with the IRL?

Were the European ovals CART's desire, or were they working under BE's
coerced "CARTmay not run road courses in Europe" rule?

Racing hasn't been the same since those board tracks burned down.

I have been paying attention. Most of the talk about safety devices
comes across as NASCAR mandating it - seat belts, fire suits, roll
cages, etc. All good, and that's the way they've been telling it for
years. But there is a real spin to the SAFER walls that makes it
sound like they were a NASCAR product.

During the Atlanta race this past Sunday, their safety feature seemed
to have that spin on both SAFER and HANS.

I'm not a NASCAR hater. I do prefer the way it used to be, when the
"S" still stood for "stock" and everyone made the show based on their
time. And I hate the way current management is moving it away from
its roots. But I definitely do not hate NASCAR.

Who cares. The IRL proved that there's significant declining interest
in ovals. That or the IRL completed the push of the oval fans to NASCAR.

Yes, truly a blessing of an improvement since then.

Just forced myself to watch "Back in the Day" because it was
Martinsville in 1968. Great action, great looking cars. But that was
another step on the slippery slope with Holman Moody front-half
Torinos and Cyclones.

Holman and Moody made Smokey Yunick look like Mr. Stick to the
Rulebook.

I never really cared for the shift to mid-size cars. I loved the full
size cars of the early to mid 60s - Pontiacs, Ford Galaxies. The
first NASCAR race I went to was at Islip in 1965. The sight of those
big square Fords running around a 1/5 mile track was incredible.

I need to keep an eye on the listings for "Back in the Day."

So is that why CART eventually went bust? They added too many ovals?

You should pay more attention. The announcers praise the barriers and HANS
devices. They praise NASCAR for the implementation of those devices at
NASCAR venues.

But you NASCAR haters hear what you want to hear.
Don't confuse praise with paid shills.

Hey, I have even seen Ken at a stock car race (although the late models WERE
a companion show with the sprint cars).

You wouldn't like that one. Cale got wrecked.
