I don't expect any more response from David on this matter than you got from him about the "dropping IRL ratings" subject. He only swings at the easy pitches. |

What would have been fun would be a back to back weekend at Indy. One weekend the road course and the other the oval. Focus on one's business is all about the attitude of those leading it. Road course, oval, street course of superspeedway, most of the basic functions of getting a race together are the same regardless of how the pavement if there is any is poured. Well...yes. One or two special occasions of F1 on ovals would be a lot of fun. Didn't some of the F1 drivers say they'd rather do the USGP on the oval instead of the road course? |

But if some promoter or TV guy decided to move F1 to mostly ovals, that would be the beginning of the end. Even if some of the ovals were dirt. It doesn't have to be that way. I know people see racing as entertainment. That's a BIG mistake. It is a sport. A sport there to make money, but this is not like a tv show. The biggest mistakes made in racing lately have been dictated by TV networks. They pay to cover the event not to control it. Entertainment tries to artificially insure the outcome is something that is exciting. A sport will allow that outcome to happen as a natural part of the competition. TV is the ruination of so many things. ESPN nearly killed Midget racing when they dictated starters. Fortunately they lost interest in short track before permanent damage was done. Now USAC is busy killing Silver Crown with their fetish about TV (even on an obscure cable station) being necessary. Spec engines, chassis's, green white checkereds, late race cautions to bunch the field all send many forms of racing into the entertainment area. A late race caution for debris that is off the racing line so you can bunch the field for a green white checkered taints all the events up to that point. If it happens naturally fine. Not to mention how TV has destroyed the baseball World Series and the sense of community that used to accompany it. |

[snip] creative minds are still out there. The next Smokey just may not be found because there really isn't that much of a need for inovation in racing these days. The new technologies are out there, its just that no one now is trying to find them. (F1 being the exception) Guaranteed there will not be another Smokey. |

It does make you wonder about the quality of the drivers and teams those two bumped out. |
