UPDATE: Gregoire Suffers Spinal Injury in Indy Crash
Written by: Jeff Olson, RACER Magazine Indianapolis, Ind. - 5/17/2007

A crash Thursday has complicated Gregoire's qualifying hopes at Indy.

Stephan Gregoire was hospitalized overnight Thursday after sustaining
a spinal fracture when his car crashed during practice for the
Indianapolis 500.

Mike Olinger, medical director for the Indy Racing League, said a
magnetic resonance imaging exam revealed Gregoire suffered an in-plate
fracture of the third thoracic vertebrae. He was held overnight at
Methodist Hospital for precautionary observation and will be released
tomorrow, Olinger said.

It was not immediately clear whether Gregoire would return to the No.
77 Chastain Motorsports Panoz-Honda. He will be examined further
Friday morning.

The team has not qualified for the race and will have to do so
Saturday or Sunday.

Gregoire was third fastest of the session when his car spun and
crashed shortly after 1 p.m. He walked from the car and appeared to be
unhurt, but he was taken to Methodist for a precautionary CAT scan on
his back and neck.

The car, which struck the wall with the rear end, sustained moderate
damage. It was the first injury of the month and just the third crash
since the track opened May 6. Jon Herb also have crashed, but were not
injured.

It's obvious that "something" did happen.

That "brain" suggestion makes a big assumption. But taking the chance
that there is something in TG's head that does not resemble the great
intergalactic void, we could consider the following two possible reasons:

1. There's nothing to damage.

2. The combination of the steel plate in his head and his miniature
brain results in a a lot of padding in the event he does fall when he's
not wearing his protective headgear.
