Default 1980 CJ5 Compression #'s? - 05-02-2006 , 03:03 PM

Hey all,

Haven't posted on here in ages since the death of my '86 CJ7's engine. I'm
looking into an '80 CJ5 today with the 4.2L I6 engine. It's been rolled on
the highway and has some hood/windshield damage. Haven't looked at it yet
but the engine is said to run fine and the frame would pass integrity (will
get this checked before purchase). I'm looking into merging the parts off my
CJ7 into this to amalgamate a nice vehicle I can build up. First off, will
the hood/windshield parts and most other parts from a CJ7 onto a CJ5 or vice
versa? My CJ7 has the small 2.5L 4cyl and is very rusty.

Also, I'm going to take a compression test of the I6 engine - what are some
good numbers? I know they should all be within 5-10 of each other but just
need a ballpark of decent #'s to watch for. My 4cyl has 3 cylinders around
130 and one in the 80's that's blowing smoke so I know that=bad.

Thanks!

There are many variables, mostly due the condition of the battery
starter, he got the important thing is they have to be within ten pounds
of each other: http://www.georgiazclub.com/tips/ztech/comptest.htm
Throttle should wide open.

I think the compression is 150, but not absolutely positive on that.

I would look for 135+ with all cylinders within 10 PSI dry. If in
doubt, drop a table spoon of oil in each cylinder and retest. If that
makes a big difference - like more that 15-20 PSI - and still within
10 PSI across the bank then it's well used but reasonable. The
absolute number is a bit tricky - sea level will be considerably
higher than in Colorado over 6,000' up.
