Hi all.... I am in the midst of getting my 81 CJ7 on the road. The fuel pump has been replaced and I now have to set up the carb. I once saw a link to a document regarding the set-up of the carb. Can anyone help here? Also I want to by-pass the computer emission control junk completely. Does anyone have any info on this. In Ontario where I live, vehicles over 20 years do not need to have an emissions test, so removing the associated equipment is not a problem. Please let me know. Many thanks in advance. -- Cannon '81 258 CJ7 92 Burb 02 Burb http://209.250.129.61/cj7/cjhome.htm |

Canadian Tire sells kits for the carb, about $20.00. They need a kit every couple years or every major tune-up. The kit comes with good setup directions. The carb has these idle tubes inside with crimped ends that physically clog up. Carb cleaner won't clean them, they need to be physically reamed out. If these idle tubes are even slightly clogged, the carb mix will 'never' set stable. It will be different every time you start it up. Here is a link on the idle tubes: http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/engine/carter.html Here is a link on putting the computer out of your misery: http://home.sprynet.com/~dale02/ignmods.htm Mike 86/00 CJ7 Laredo, 33x9.5 BFG Muds, 'glass nose to tail in '00 88 Cherokee 235 BFG AT's "Cannon (O|||||||O)" wrote: Hi all.... Where in Ontario are you? If you are close to TO, I am just stuck home here for the summer bored half out of my skull due to being a passenger in a car accident, can't help mush with the physical work, but can sure point if you need a hand. Helped Steve Seppala from this group and a friend of his do a driveshaft, tie rod end, front end alignment, route the emissions plumbing right, and put a carb kit in his friend's 82 a week ago. They brought the beer and BBQ and I brought my brains, moral support, tools and mouth... ;-) I am pretty good at 'tweaking' carbs and routing emissions plumbing properly. The ones I have personally set up with the computer dump have even passed emissions. Oh, I just noticed you have an 81, you have no computer to mess with and a carb that is 'easy' to set up, Bonus! Ignore the 'Nutter' stuff. There also is a bunch of us from this newsgroup that go out on deep bush runs in the Bancroft area two or three or more times a year. 'Family' style vacation trips usually with wives and kids of all ages along. Crown land camping with nice beaches and fishing. One trip is planned for the first week in Sept. including the long weekend as a finish. Some folks come for the first weekend, some the whole 10 days and some just for the long weekend. I am just going to be a beach bum and 'maybe' be able to canoe and fish this year, can't off road. If you are interested, email me for more details. Mike, I'm in Whitby and I had a little engine fire not too long ago and she just hasn't worked right since. Up the street from me there is both a beer store and a butcher which sells great 1.5 pound steaks. I'd love a hand one weekend in bypassing the computer and double checking the vacuum lines. I recognized your name from my off road list I believe. Have we met up on a run yet? I am not too mobile right now. I can't physically drive the Cherokee yet, don't fit in the seat and the CJ needs work before I can take it much farther than the corner store or the doctors. The tie rod broke, I got it cobbled it back together, but the alignment is way off. Norm has a tie rod for me as soon as he gets back from vacation. He's going to put it on then too. That will be in a couple weeks by the looks of it. I would still be open to you coming by here. No we haven't went on a run yet. After the engine fire it sat around for awhile before I had the time to rewire everything. Every time I'd get an email about a run, there was some problem with the truck or I was away on business. I don't know if you are in the area but I figured you were from where you were going on the runs. I saw a Jeep that matches the description of yours to a "T" down at a plant in south Whitby and I've always wondered if it was yours. If you are in Durham it would be great to hook up and have you critique the rust on my truck. I can bring the beer and somesteaks. If this sounds feasible for maybe this weekend email me and we'll set something up.
