How long ago was it? If it was just recently they might
have fogotten to connect the rear O2 sensor back.

I got a recall notice for my 96 Cherokee, they wanted to flash the
computer and would replace the cat if it was rattling. The problem was
that the computer wouldn't pick up a failing cat.

Well my cat DID rattle, but it stopped about 200,000 miles ago, and I
figured the stuff had fallen out of it, but the check engine light never
came on.

OK, so I probably have a bad cat and the computer didn't know it. If
I'd taken it into the dealer they would have "fixed" the computer but
would not have replaced the cat because it didn't rattle. So I would
have driven in the dealership in a good, healthy Jeep and driven out
with the check engine light on.

Needless to say I did not take it in!

I hope you didn't get caught in that, if you did you probably need a new
cat, if they really did plug the downstream O2 sensor back in.

If it's on the recall, it should be replaced.

Tell them you want the old cat, I hear they can be worth up to $100

Well that was pretty smart.

Had you read the recall, you would know that the warranty on the cat
would be extended to 12 months or 12,000 miles from the date the
recall was performed.

Yeah, you sure wouldn't want to get caught in getting a free cat
converter...

I DID read the recall, and talked to the service managers at two
different dealerships. If the cat was rattling WHEN THE JEEP WAS
BROUGHT IN they would replace it, if it doesn't rattle they wouldn't
replace it. Doesn't matter if it worked or not, the only question was
if it rattled.

If they would have replaced the cat for no charge I would have brought
the Jeep in, no telling what they would have wanted to charge me to get
my Jeep back working no better than it already was.
