Default Cherokee Liftgate Question - 04-21-2006 , 10:23 AM

Are the struts supposed to *push* the liftgate open, or just keep it
from falling closed?

I have to pull the liftgate open, against what resistance the struts
provide. And when it's really cold out (for Socal!) the struts don't
hold the liftgate up at the highest position (the liftgate drops
3-6").

So, what's "normal" for this?

TIA

Yours are worn out. It is best to replace them in pairs.

Both of my XJ's will open by themselves. One has new struts.

I have the same thing with my hood. They will work fine all summer so plan
on replacements next winter when you are reminded by the tailgate falling on
your head.

Never have I seen a tailgate or hood, open automatically, we are
supposed to lift it, like the old days before struts when car American
cars used real gears and springs.

I only have to push the button and crack my 88's back door and it opens
by itself. Same with my 87's.

Same with mine. The original struts wore out a few years ago and I
spent something like 36 bucks on a new pair. It was money well spent,
push the button and the hatch just opens up.

Ditto here. I had to lift the gate on my 93 when I bought it used then it began
falling back down. Like Jeff, I spent about $36 for struts and now it opens
inself.
