So I got my stock side steps and I went to the dealer and picked up 8 rivet
nuts.

I found this site that give step by step instructions :-)

The problem is I do not have a rivet nut installation bolt or a rivet nut
installation tool.

The rivet nut installation tool looks like some kind of nut that will keep
the rivet nut from turning so you can collapse the rivet.

The dealer told me that they do not sell the installation bolt or tool. He
said that I could use the bolt that I am going to attach the step with as
the installation bolt, and that I could get a rivet nut installation tool at
the lowes or home depot.

Needless to say I couldnt find what I needed at home depot and the employees
had no idea.

Any help here is greatly appretiated :-)

Probably your stealership's mechanics never bother to buy the tool
because an air impact wrench will zip it up by just putting the nut in a
little bind, maybe with a socket, just big enough to use the draw bolt

nuts from the depot tomorrow, but first i think I'll swing back over to the
dealer and try to get them to give/sell me some the right size :-) I should
at least give them a little grief for just sending me to tha hardware store
to get me out of the way!

How much pressure is it going to take to bend that metal on the rivet to
seat it?

I've managed to do it with short wrenches on 1/4" bolt types. Not too
tough. Get good at it, and on the larger bolts, you can even do it with
an impact if you have rear talent for finesse. You still use a wrench on
the oversized nut for the backup. I prefer the airtools since I get a
better feel of when it's properly collapsed. Remember, I've got 21 years
of hands on, so if you don't feel comfortable, be sure and use the hand
tools!
