I have an 89 Wrangler with tilt wheel and manual transmission. When I turn the wheels all the way to the right or left, the steering wheel can continue to spin, causing misalignment of the steering wheel. What is the problem and how do I fix it? Thanks |

There is a joint in the middle of the steering column. Check that it is tight. If the steering wheel turns after the tires hit the turn stops, I'd be very concerned that the steering wheel may turn while the tires remain wherever they are currently aimed. It seems to me that this may pose a problem for you and others nearby. m... (AT) skabrewing (DOT) com> wrote in message news:1178499307.076680.42280 (AT) o5g2000hsb (DOT) googlegroups.com... I have exactly the same concerns! I'll go check it out right now! On May 6, 8:01 pm, "Jeff Strickland" <c... (AT) verizon (DOT) net> wrote: There is a joint in the middle of the steering column. So, I went to check it out and I found the linkage between the column and the steering rod. On one side of the u-joint was a pinch bolt onto the steering column and on the other side was a rubber joint of some sort that looks like it could move back and forth. When I turn the steering wheel this was where the slipping was happening. I couldn't get it any closer together or farther apart and I can't tell how this union works...Any suggestions? I'm thinking that it's a pinch bolt on both sides. m... (AT) skabrewing (DOT) com> wrote in message news:1178502354.501196.208560 (AT) y5g2000hsa (DOT) googlegroups.com... It's not a pinch bolt on the wheel side(There is a pinch bolt on the column side). It has an interior flexible rubber boot with a metal exterior that connects to the u-joint. Because of the rubber coupling, I can flex it back and forth a 1/2"+-. Thanks for any suggestions. BTW, I put a 3" body lift on it. It looks as if that might have caused the steering rod(?) to expand to accomodate the lift... On May 6, 8:50 pm, "Jeff Strickland" <c...
