My neighbor went to the local steel yard and bought some 2x3 box channel and
a length of 6" plate steel. He cut a slot in the box stock, and slipped the
plate into it and welded in in place, then he drilled holes in the plate and
attached to the side of his YJ. The box stock will have to bend in order for
the tub to bend, and he gets the benefit of having a sidestep.

They are both well suited for what they do. The Tomkin offers a side
step
that the Sun does not provide. If you have people that have difficulty
getting in and out, the Tomkin is an excellent choice.

I am planning on installing some rocker guards before I try The
Rubicon trail. There are a few models out there, among them a
v-channel type made by Sun Performance Products and a 2x4 type bar
made by Tomkin that appears to bolt directly to the frame. Any
recommendations one way or another?

No, I have no pics. Sorry.

Envision, invision, pretend in your mind, a cross between the Tomkin style
bars and the Sun Performance panels that wrap around the bottom of the
rocker panels.

He used a chopsaw with a metal cutting blade to cut the slot, so the blade
is the same thickness as the plate steel. He also used some sort of drill
bit that cut countersunk holes, then used a tapered screw. His bars extend
from wheel well to wheel well, and he closed them at both ends. Frankly, I
think he could make some money selling them if he could get them poweder
coated somewhere for cheap.

I saw a powder coating outfit @ eastwood tools for a pretty reasonable. I am
trying to practice my welding until I get enough experience to make my
bumpers, rocker panel guards, etc - next expense w/b to purchase the powder
coating outfit.
Was the rocker panel guard strong enough to be a jack point like the ones
made by Sun?

Oh yeah, they are very strong. I suppose you could bend them by jacking in
the exact wrong spot, but you could easily hit the right spot.

I've been trying to get some, but none of their suppliers, nor they, will
ship anything other than UPS and Fedex and I'm not paying 300 bucks for
postage. Carriers like BAX Global charge just over 1/3rd of UPS.

Hey! Why don't you do some CJ5s? You are not prejudiced, are you. Just
because we have short Jeeps doesn't mean that we haven't got feelings, you
know. We have rights to be recognized, you can't ignore us like that! Where
is my lawyer when I need him?

On a more serious note, that is a pretty good site.

Jeff,

Thank for the kudos on the site.

No prejudice to the CJ5s here... my first Jeep was (still is) a 79 CJ5. As
a matter of fact the project on my website started as a frame up of that
very CJ5. Well, as well all know how Jeep stuff goes... it's now a CJ7. I
did manage to use the motor and rims from the CJ5.

If you want the Rockers for a CJ5.. I can work that for you too. Let me
know.

BTW... how's my old AMC 20 diff cover doing?... treating her right?

Jay

Your diff cover is happy and doing well. I bought a diff guard from the 4X
Doctor, so the pesky edge on the bottom is sandwiched between some pretty
healthy chunks of steel.

That whole prejudice thing was tongue-in-cheek, don't worry. Isn't your CJ7
really a CYJ? Didn't I read that you used a YJ tub?

I think I am going to use my brother's chop saw with a metal blade, and take
a crack at making some rocker guards with metal from the local steel yard. I
think the material will run me about 20 or 30 bucks, and the saw blade will
be another 30 or so. My brother plans on buying a welder, so I'll use it to
learn how to weld. I'm thinking I will have some dandy rocker guards for
less than 100 bucks, and a new tool in my locker when I am done.

Regards,
Jay

Hey! Why don't you do some CJ5s? You are not prejudiced, are you. Just
because we have short Jeeps doesn't mean that we haven't got feelings,
you
know. We have rights to be recognized, you can't ignore us like that!
Where
is my lawyer when I need him?

On a more serious note, that is a pretty good site.

I've been trying to get some, but none of their suppliers, nor they,
will
ship anything other than UPS and Fedex and I'm not paying 300 bucks
for
postage. Carriers like BAX Global charge just over 1/3rd of UPS.

on
the metal
