This was true in the past, but not for cars such as the RX 330 that have a knock sensor. The ignition controller will set ignition timing based on the antiknock ability of the fuel. A higher octane fuel will allow the controller to run with more advanced timing. Progressively early ignition timing during the compression stroke allows the motor to extract more of the heat energy available in the fuel by letting more of the combustion process complete during the power stroke. All octane grades have the same potential to generate heat. However, higher octanes facilitate a more efficient combustion process. Therefore, what the RX manual says about recommended octane is true. |
