Default 2003 E320 v BMW - 08-06-2003 , 10:31 PM

Greetings:

I'm anticipating the new BMW 530 as being overpriced. As an alternative, I
believe I'd prefer a 2002 or 03 E320.

Any comments on the MB would be appreciated

If you are looking for a luxury car without the fun of the ultimate driving
machine then I'd suggest the E-Class. If you want a car that is exciting to
drive but not as luxurious and user friendly as the Benz then I'd suggest
the 5-Series. Although these cars have very similar power ratings the BMW is
going to be alot higher on the 'fun to drive' scale. Regarding pricing I
think the standard E320 will be around $5k more than the standard new
5-Series. A small difference so I'd suggest going with your preference,
performance or luxury.

I have a 96 E320 and just gave it to my daughter to drive for a few years.
It is the most reliable car I have ever owned. I have had to replace the
rear window regulators and that is it in 7 years! Still drives perfect. Not
a rattle or squeak. Interior wears like iron. I wore out the front door grip
inside after 5 years on the driver's side.

If I were looking for a used E though, I would look for a E430. The extra
power is great and the mileage is just slightly worse. It also has a stiffer
suspension due to active suspension in the front. I replaced my E320 with a
2003 E500 and although the new model is better in many ways, The old one is
superior in chassis rigidity, quietness and smoothness of ride. It's also
heavier.

Although the BMW 5-Series is hardly unreliable I would have to say Mercedes
is slightly more reliable.

That used to be the case. Now I believe BMW has ranked higher than MB for at
least the past two years.

In addition, BMW is becoming very luxurious. Getting into the new 7-series in
person was a rude awakening. I used to think the S-class was better. In all
fairness, the current S-class is older......so I will wait to see the next S.
Back to the topic E vs. 5. The new 5 looks good......will have to test it out
in person.

Some things look great in photo and some great cars look horrible in
photo.....like the new Rolls Royce Phantom......saw it in
person.........wow........now that car speaks PRESENCE....... drive that new
RR around and you basically tell other drivers, I could afford two of your top
cars, but you can't even touch this........ the "badge"....isn't it a great
thing when you have money?

I remember my friend who had such bad luck that when his first day with a brand
new M3, a lamborghini pulled up next to him and gave him the "I'm much better
than you look"....... he's never seen a lamborghini prior to that. The same
shit that MB drivers do to Nissan drivers...... the chain never ends. There's
always someone better and someone lesser........choose the car that you really
like within your budget.

For me, if I had all the money in the world, I would get an Aston Martin.
Since I don't, let me get back to this E320 vs. 5 series, and all Japanese cars
must be cheap intellectual masturbation.... with the rest of you.

Any Japanese car. "The ultimate driving appliance".

Maybe, maybe not. A relative of mine has a '99 E class and a late model
Toyota Avalon. Both he and his wife strongly prefer the Avalon. YMMV.

I have driven both E-430's and E-320's (both 2001 models) over the same
long-haul routes a few times. In every case, the fuel mileage was
BETTER in the E-430 (by about 1-2 mpg) than the E320. Maybe the V-8 has
to work less, or they are geared differently...in any case the V-8 was
always better in fuel mileage.
