Hello everyone...

Took my 89 300E for the emmisions test today here in NJ and this is what
happened... Failed for the parking brake...I have to tighten it...
Failed for the NOx part of the emmisions...came in at "1700" a normal
reading is "1146." I have a whole new exaust system and catalytic
converter, as well as o2 sensor. I run hi-test fuel in it also. A friend
said to pour a lot of dry gas in it to help pass the test... Any help is
greatly appreciated- Charlie-NJ

What is your HC and CO level? You need to lean that fuel mixture out alot
more.

Stuff you put in gas to "dry it out"... it binds with the water molecules in
gasoline to prevent freezing... I don't think I ever seen frozen gas...yet.

You could google it...

Was your car thoroughly warmed-up when you took it in for inspection? My '88
260E would not pass unless I took it out and drove it at highway speeds for
at least 15 minutes prior to going in for inspection. My mechanic said that
the cars were engineered in such a way that they ran really rich until
completely warmed up. Once I followed this procedure, I never came close to
failing the NOx test again.

BTW - still got the car. Running strong on original engine at 325,000+
miles.

The Cat and the O2 sensor must warm up to the point where the Cat lows
CO2 emissions, and the O2 sensor can read the air/fuel ratio to
transmit the proper adjust factor to the ECU. A gas analyzer is
absolutly necessary to fine tune the system. After that, i'm sure the
car will pass the emissions test like a charm.
