It took me a lot longer and many more miles, but then I went the pretty way
.... via CH, IT and Dubrovnik...

IIRC Pula has a 'Top 5' Roman amphitheatre.

I wonder if Filip is from anywhere near there...

you count in a break for lunch. Did it two years ago with my BMW
convertible with the top down and loved every single mile.

My way is via Austria, Slovenia (passing Dubrovnik), Opatija (too much
tourists) and the new freeway across Istria - very nice.

transmission oil is good? would a test drive be sufficient?

Take out the disptick (red one near th firewall) and look at and feel the
fluid. It should be red and should feel smooth and lubricanty.

It's a serious luxury sedan. The rear, upper strut links of the
five
arm
multi-link rear suspension are probably shot by now.
They bear the brunt of the weight when turning a corner. MB has
replaced
that arm with an upgraded heavy-duty one along with a newly
designed
bolt
w/
hex head. The front swaybar bushings should be replaced. New
Bilstein
shocks
and struts would make a huge improvement. All this is available
discounted
from Rusty Cullen at 800-741-5252. P.

Struts? Upper strut links? Is that for the hydraulis rear suspension
cars? THat was only on the 560's in the US. My car has 4 shocks and
no struts.

It's a given that on a Mercedes this old you replace all the
suspension
rubber if you want to to ride like new.

Ok, you ask how do you know if the tranny fluid is good. The answer is, pull
out the dipstick and look at the fluid, is it red, or is it black? Red is
good, black is bad. Feel it. Smooth is good, gritty is very bad.

I trust you know that "tranny" is transmission, also known as gearbox. :-)

A dipstick is a stick (or rod) that is dipped into something. The best
known one is the one for oil.

Not too far in front of the firewall on the (US) passenger side of the motor.
