I' have to look for the flaps.

One thing that is cool about this car is that there no rust. Not in the
fender arches. Not at the bottom of the doors. Not under the window. I think
that it spent most of its life in Southern CA.

There is vent flaps in the trunk. On W126, it is located in the side
pockets in the trunk toward the spare tire There should be a hole and a
rubber flap on each side. Pretty big oval hole.

I am wondering if someone replaced those side pockets as a possibility of
rust. Without this vent, your AC won't work well either... there got to be
some vent to prevent building up pressure as you drive faster.

My 190 is from 1983. No rust, as far as I can tell, and that has spent its
entire life in Damp Olde Englande...

Well, I had to replace a rusty silencer a few weeks ago, but that doesn't
count.

Tiger,

I own a 1981 300SD (W126) and my wife bought a 1985 300D Turbo three
years ago. During the winter here in Victoria BC the W126 has no
condensation on the inside of the windows. However, condensation in the
W123 is quite bad on the side and rear windows. Heat delivery is also
relatively poor. AC is disconnected. I have been wondering for some
time about ventilation.

Where exactly do i look to confirm that the vents are open and working
as designed? It is not quite clear from the various posts. I have a
set of maintenance CDs by Mercedes. Is the cabin ventilation described
in the manuals? If so, i have not found it yet.

Regards / John

As does my '01 Porsche 911 coupe. Purpose is unknown, but apparently does
not have to do with a cloth top.

Mercedes W140 Coupes do this too.

The purpose is to avoid the pressure shock for the passengers, to reduce
the necessary closing impact so that a driving girl may close the
passenger door and, most important, to close the windows vertically
tight in its rubber seal bed to avoid wind noise and aerodynamic losses.

Compare the nearly flat rubber sealed door slit for all cars with max
speed more than 190 km/h. The force and noise at open slits are a problem.

The typical max speed of more than 230km/h that were reached in the late
8oties with moderately motorized cars were a product of all such fine
tuning in the wind channel.

There are no flaps on the W123. The vent, like Roland stated is below the
rear window. It is good for normal ventilation. Not enough to aid in door
and trunk closing.

Thanks for telling me about the flaps on the W126. I went to the wrecking
yard see how the flaps are done. The W126 there had some really nice 16"
wheels. I bought them for my W123 Coupe. They seem to fit fine. There is
only about 1MM clearance between the tie-rod end and the rim. From the part
number, they are from a 1999 C280 or C230. I would not have gone to the yard
if not for your post.

There got to be some vent in the trunk... otherwise that is the problem you
are having. I can't imagine a car that doesn't have it.

Did you see the flap on the W126? You should consider retrofittong one into
your car... It would really save you alot of headaches.

You need to look at the chassis section of the manual for more details about
the AC. As Commuter pointed out, he didn't see any other vents in the trunk
and I am stump... there has got to be something.

There has got to be some hole in the trunk that allows for pressure change
in the cabin. I would take out all covers and tires out of the trunk and
look for a vent... it has to be big... maybe the size of your hand.
