Is the crank case vented? My 998 motor did not have a crankcase vent (a pipe on the clutch housing which goes back up to the inlet manifold.) The pipe has a filter in it which stops the oil going up. My 1275 does have that.

Anyone know if the 1990 1275 was also vented as i describe?

Had a friend show me a Mini and wanted to know how to confirm what engine it was. I thought "easy, let's look at numbers." Nope. None. There is no number on the head (any more) and no body number. It looks like a 1275 (which it's supposed to be) from, oh, about 1990. Is there a definitive way to tell on this motor? Is there a clean list of check-points that don't include the obvious add-ons (carb, brakes, ignition, etc.)?

Have a look at the back of the block, if there are tappet chest covers then its probably a 998. (1275 S engines had them but they are very rare)

Also, if it is a 1275 then the thermostat housing should point towards the front of the car. If it's at an angle, then its a 998.

Also, if its in it's original paint, then a 1275 engine is Red, 998's are a yellow/green colour.

One other thing is 1275's have a breather on the flywheel housing. 998's don't.

Hi,
All 1275s have a flat machined area between the thermostat cover and the Valve cover. all other engines have a rough cast area here and it is much smaller.
