The mk1 heater is usually a square box with the lever coming from the front,
some however and commercials had a circular case holding the motor and fan,
I dont think these had a control lever, just a switch for on/off.

Sounds like a good description of the one I have. I wonder what it is
worth. Perhaps I will put it on eBay with no reserve...

It is the early heater that was offered as an optional extra. I think it
continued later in the commercials than in the cars. There were at least 2
styles of case over the years, but basically the same shape.
Yeah, they were standard on the Deluxe and Super, but not on the
Standard model. The later type with the lever on the front is the
fresh air type - there is also a big hose coming from the front of the
car to the heater. You can get hot and cold air from this type,
wereas one the earlier one you had to manually change the setting in
the engine bay!

I have both - the later type in my '64 Super Deluxe, and the earlier
type in my January '62 Deluxe.

The Mk II Minis that went to New Zealand went without heaters. Mine was
made by a company called National Radiator in Wellington. It sits well back
under the dash, and has a rheostatic switch, so you could fully control the
flow of air! It is always pointed at the dash, and if you want floor vent,
you just open a little flap on the bottom of the heater box for whichever
side you want the thing to vent to!

If you look at my site www.mini316.com there's pictures of it being rebuilt
in there somewhere. I actually managed to get new original parts for it -
motor and switch - from the company. When they'd stopped making the thing
many years ago they just put some in storage "just in case". I have to get
the core rebuilt but that's no problem.

Value??? Well, not a lot unless someone wants to complete a show car
rebuild. I think we were selling known good ones at about £10-£20 up
till a couple of years ago. They also get used for series one Land
Rovers. Also remember selling one to go in a Jaguar XK120! However,
eBay is a law unto itself and sometimes the strangest things fetch
silly money!

I believe many early heaters were re-circulating types?

That's almost certainly because you need to replace the pump. Good electric
washers are always better than the old manual type. The problem is that the
impeller deteriorates in the electric pump and then they loose pressure.
