Sigh.

People had a choice. They could buy a Mini or a Fiesta or a Niki.

People have a choice. They can buy a MINI or a Golf or a Corolla.

The Mini was not killed off by BMW. The Mini was killed off by progress,
by changing automotive construction standards and by changing markets.

It's a fun car, it's a great hobby, but it's not Jesus inCARnate.
It is an inspired 1950s low budget design which everyone else long ago
improved on and which only the British could have persisted in
manufacturing with such poor quality and selling for so long.

It's one thing to enjoy playing with them, but don't worship them!

Well to be honest the Bini is really a BMW Metro, except they used the more
successful name of MINI.

I agree with that and I agree a Mini is just a car and we shouldn't idolise
it. Trouble is it's the most human of cars and has the sort of incredible
history most motor manufacturers (BMW included) would kill for (Yes they
killed Rover for it, well the name anyway and then created another bland
hatchback).

But apart from all this, the real Mini as we know is fun to drive and still
unique for all it's historical idiosyncrasies.

Rather like the way Rover flogged the original design until they'd wrung
every last quid out of it?
No it was the buying public and the cars fans that kept the original design
alive. Rover wanted to kill it off as did it's ancestors (BL, BMC, Austin
Rover etc,) for years, but thankfully somebody (Graham Day?) at the top had
enough sence to keep it going and reinstate the Cooper name too.

Sales of the Metro were the only thing keeping BL afloat for almost a
decade, right up to the Honda partnership.
"The Metro didn't succeed" was directed at the previous discussion about how
the BMW was responsible for "killing" the mini. In the context in which it
was written, it happened on this planet. In the context you have placed it,
you attempt to make me look like an idiot because you haven't kept this
previous statement made by jono.

"The metro although dreadful did at least keep the mini going for some
time, you had a choice, metro or mini, people didnt like the metro bought a
mini,"

In the flow of the conversation it does actually inferr that the Metro was
responsible for keeping "BL afloat for almost a decade" although it didn't
give a strict time frame like you have done.

The same can be said about the clubman as well, but before anyone starts
having ago, the clubman is undoubtatly a mini in all aspects. The clubman
was developed to replace the mini as the metro was supposed to do. The
clubman was designed to take a new larger engine setup that never emerged,
so the clubman died out when the new inovation never occured, people just
bought the standard Mini because it was a cheap good car in around 1980ish.
Then almost the same year the metro actually filled the gap left by the
likes of the Clubman estate, so although going off on a tangent, the metro
actually attempted to replace the clubman with its modern looks and also
replace the clubman estate with its hatchback design, the metro van also
replaced the mini van in around 1981.
So going back to what i was trying to say, you can plot a time time line
quite easily as follows:-

1950's - Austin A30, saloon, estate and van. 1952-1968
1960's - Austin Mini, saloon, estate and van. 1959-2001
1970's - Clubman, saloon and estate. 1969-1981
1980's - Metro, Hatchback and van. 1980-1995
1990's - 100, Hatchback. 1995-1998
2000's - 25, Hatchback and van. 1995-to date
all years are approx.
Each and every model attempted to replace its former, its just the Mini
never got dropped or stopped.
The Clubman attempted to replace the Mini, and it was the Metro that
attempted to replace the Clubman, both however failed, you could say that
the clubman and the metro did not suceed in replacing the Mini, it was the
back room boys that put an end to it, european safety rules, market plans
and boffins that think they could recreate the Mini.

I sometimes wonder though, Rover were playing with a number of thier own
proto types in the late 90's, I wonder if they had gone ahead we would have
accepted it more by us in the real mini fraternaty, being made by Rover and
all?
