Default strange screem from front wheels - 12-01-2003 , 02:41 PM

Hey people,

Very scary noise from the front wheels of my Mini on Saturday. Really loud
creaky screaching.. sounded like a cross between old horror movie castle
gates opening, slipping fan belt sound and sanding metal.. it happened
whenever the car moved, even in neutral so must be something after the
clutch towards the wheels. Stopped it by driving fast backwards 10metres
and then stopping hard, then doing the same forwards about 4 or 5 times.

What on earth could it have been - perhaps bearings in front wheels or the
diff??

Thoughts appreciated

James

Take off the front wheels. Check if the big central castle nu is still tight
on the shaft.
If it came loose by itself, the front wheel bearings are dying.

A stone was caught between the brake disc and the stone guard

As the stone wears away it fly's out. If you jar it often on speed bumps it
also fly's out.

In many late Mini's I have had with front discs, when going over speed bumps
the disc back plates always rattle badly like something is gonna fall off!

Don't know - I ripped the left one off when it stress fractured at the
mounting points by bending it out of shape at the side of the road. The
cost of a replacement is horrendous!!! At least Dick Turpin wore a mask.
Doubt I'll replace it.

Anywho....

reversing a few yards normally ejects the said stone with no spanner work.
