Default unleaded cylinder head question - 07-03-2003 , 06:00 PM

Hi All,

Can anyone advise if i can do my own visual check to see if my mini has an
unleaded cylinder head?

It's a Mini Advantage 1988 with a yellow head, I was told that if its an
original engine, which it is, that the colour may indicate it, but i'm
unsure.

Any advice would help, and I am quite prepared to take the head off to check
this.

Cheers.

Dick Jones.

Unless the head has been changed then it's probably not unleaded. Check the
engine nummber. if it begins 99HE then it's unleaded. If it's 99H
something else then it probably won't be. I had an E reg 1988 Mini Mayfair,
that wasn't unleaded. I think they started being unleaded during 1989 on
an F registration in the UK. I've seen some F reg Minis that are unleaded
and some that aren't.

the F reg i had previously was not unleaded. You can use unleaded with the
use of a supliment available in halfords - castrol valve master. It has a
handy measuring chamber which gives the correct dosage ratio. It also
includes an octane boost to make up for the difference in octane

I think Clive is right. My mayfair is the 1989 model which I heard were the
first ones to run on unleaded fuel. So if the engine is original that means
it's not unleaded. But you won't necessarily find out reading the letters
printed on the head. The previous owner might have taken the car to get
converted. That means they change the valve seats but the head stays the
same. Maybe you should ask the person who sold it to you
