Default Voltage Stabiliser - 01-19-2007 , 08:46 AM

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice on wirng up a replacement set of instruments to
my Mini.

In the standard 3 instrument dash there is a voltage stabiliser burried away
inside it. It is shown on the wiring diagrams as a square with 3
connections. These are as follows:

E - Connected to chassis
B - Connected to the negative side of the oil and alternator warning lights
I - Connected to the negative side of fuel and temp guages

Does anyone know anything about this voltage stabiliser e.g. what is it's
purpose (apart from stabilising voltage), how it works, is it possible to
buy a seperate component to do the job, is it needed?

Thanks,
Chris.

Good Day,

To answer your question, the voltage stabilizer is just that... a voltage
stabilizer!
I it used to (get ready for this... to stabilize the voltage! Can you imagine
that?) that the needle on the gauge doesn't flicker around back and forth
giving you an accurate gauge reading. I am not going to get into how it works,
as it would take up several pages of typig that I don't feel like prcking out!
If you purchase new "Smiths" instuments which are conventual electrical "old
school" clocks, they come with said voltage stabilizer. and installation
instructions and a discrption of how they work.
If you buy something like "AutoMeter, VDO" as an example, the regulater is
built right in to the instrument.
Now, you mentioned a tree clock dash, do you mean like a classic dash with the
big centre speedo? Or a late lodel Dash .As far as a seperate "Unit" , the
voltage stabilizer is a seperate unt! and yes it is needed... To stabilize the
voltage!
Ry

Thanks for the info guys.

The dash is from a late model. I noticed the bi-metalic strip tacked on the
back of the fuel / temp gauge but wasn't 100% that this was what I was
looking for. It certainly doesn't have the appearance of a seperate
component like the one on the Smiths datasheet.

Cheers,
Chris.

Remove all but 'E' this will cure your problem, connect as usual
