Default Vtec Mini - Project Car - 11-30-2003 , 04:30 PM

Right Its Time!

Its time to start on my project car, Ive decided im gonna have a dabble at
building a Vtec Powered Mini.

Ive had a look at lots of articles from various sources, has anyone done
this DIY Stylee before? Any Advice or Problems that anyone has encountered
when trying this before?

Im really excited about doing this, and my father who was hesitant at first
is coming around to the Idea (His Garage im going to be consuming)

Thanks In Advance

Tom

He's more likely to find useful information about butchering an
Issigonis Mini here than in the BMW group, and he'll provide some light
relief from more "normal" Mini issues.

Keeping the classic mini on the roads is hard enough - getting harder due to
the depleted mg metro sources, so other engine transplants like the honda
1.6 vtec, vauxhall astra 2.0l and possibly bike engine(s) have to be
considered. The way i look at it is, as long as its basically a mini shell,
who cares - more to the point - no one else will realise that you can beat
an xr3i and such off the lights in a little mini. go on tom is my veiw.
Read mini world at all? one of their extra magazines is Keeping Your Mini
Alive (KYMA) and one of the later issues has a step by step guide (using a
purchased spaceframe). maybe take a look.

best wishes in makeing a quick as sh!t off a shiny shovel mini.

Here's a good website:
http://minimikebc.tripod.com/
Mike took the 100% diy route.

If you want to buy a subframe, one of the SAMOA club members here in
Seattle is producing a really nice one

Cheers,

Kelley

Mini's are so versatile, we did lots of engine swaps in the 70s ,,with
Austin 1300 & MG 1300 engines ,,, these basically went straight in,
but made the mini move like it was on Steroids,
GO FOR IT TOM

Look at http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/
Also for ready made subframe kits look up watsons conversions site with
google.

Thanks for the Support guys,

My initial Idea was to go for the R1 conversion and have the lot done by
zcars, but I didn't like the fact of having an engine thats only meant to
shift 250kg running nearly every day ( I still want to use this car most of
the time). Plus the cost escalated quite quickly and it looked like the
whole thing was going to cost around 10k.

Ryan : thanks for the info on KYMA i'll go and snoop that out tomoz, I have
found various sites on with info. If anyone who hasnt seen it check out
http://www.ringmini.de/English_Versi.../-videos-.html the top two of
the vids on that is one going around the Nuremberg ring, it really is quite
insanely fast.

I've seen ones that have been done with extending the front end or a flip
open bonnet, again this is something im not that keen on, want to keep the
shell orginal.

This is not going to be a quick project, and because of that it means I have
the advantage of being able to spend more money over time, its going to be a
complete new build so a full strip down of a mini (still yet to be
purchased) and I dont think im expecting any change from 10k but every
single penny is going to be worth it I know that much.

Again thanks for all of your postive feed back and suggestions and I will
keep you upto date with the progress as I go along!
