Default where's the battery positive? - 08-28-2003 , 01:33 PM

as said in previous posts I'm wiring up a pair of spotlamps. I'm pretty sure
on how to do the job, but I'm missing one point: Where and how do I pick up
the battery positive? I've looked around under the bonnet and found a couple
of thick brown wires which hook up to the starter solenoid, which seem to
reappear at the fuse box. But how to work from there I don't know...

hiya
perhaps you need to ask a mechanic to do it.

Yep, but that's the reason why I want to learn how do it by myself... I
won't start anything before I'm 100% sure on how to do it though, that's why
I'm bugging the NG so much!

On most British cars, Brown is a direct battery +ve connection. Purple
is a fused battery connection. White is a +ve feed switched by the
ignition switch, and Green is a switched +ve that is also fused. Other
subsidiary wires have a base colour and a tracer stripe colour. If you
look at the colours on a wiring diagram it makes sense.

The wiring colour codes are in the specification number BS-AU7

So yes, after all that, Brown is a direct battery positive feed!

As others have said the solenoid has a terminal which is effectively battery
+ve. The other alternative which may be more convenient if you are mounting
the relay on the bulkhead is the fusebox. As you correctly saw there are
some brown wires coming to a couple of terminals on the fusebox and these
are the supply for unswitched fused items (hazard lights, etc), the either
side of the fuse will be the purple wires Chris mentioned. There is often a
spare terminal on the supply side which you can use to take a feed off.

Remember to add a fuse to your spotlamp circuit!

Shaun.
