Why is non functioning ABS (ok, a dodgy light, which is usually
because of non functioning ABS) an MOT faluire?
In theory it's because you have a malfunction with your brakes.

than a non ABS fitted vehicle.

Erm, erm, erm... Because. Don't ask silly questions. Just because.

Same for windbags.
What is ?
Airbags (both system and dashboard indicator) aren't part of the MOT...

Lordy (spam (AT) recycle (DOT) bin) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were
saying :

It does if you think the ABS is working. ;-)

But they usually tend to have more servo assistance so it's easier to lock
up the wheels on a panic stop if it's not working.

Wonder how they'd test them anyway? ;-)

Bit like testing matches...

Same as for the ABS, correct operation of the dashboard indicator.

Debate is currently ongoing with the intention of introducing it into
the MOT with the next few years...

Too easy to fiddle.

You could easily devise an MOT test for ABS - after all, they used to test
the normal brakes on the road and use a Tapley meter to record their
performance. They may still do with some 4x4s.

But testing airbags for efficiency might be more of a problem.

sounding much like they were saying :

AFAIK, ABS is not actually checked on the MoT (because not all
cars have it - or need it) but if the light is on they'll fail
it.

If it's fitted, it's got to work - well, the light has to behave
"correctly".

Like I said, just the light. There's no actual test in the MoT to
engage the ABS and see if it's working.

It should also fail if ABS is fitted but the light doesn't come on
with the ignition in the recognised self-test pattern. This is
intended, I think, to stop people just removing the bulb.

But, no, there's no actual test to see if it's actually *working* or
if the bulb's just been connected to the oil pressure sensor....
Obviously - ive a dodgy (normal) mot tester. Hooray.
But its a hit and miss affair.
Considering the cost of replacing an ABS computer or suchlike charged from
main dealers?
Think this is a bit of a grey area.
