Default Air-con Dry Mouth - 07-17-2006 , 04:30 AM

Hi,

Last Autumn I changed my car from a Nissan Almera 1.4 GX (penultmate
model) to a Toyota Avensis T2 1.8 petrol. I've noticed
that when the air-con is ON, I now get a very dry mouth, which I find
quite unpleasant. I didn't get this with the Nissan.

Has anyone else noticed this effect, or is it just me? Could there be a
leak of refrigerant? Does the gas in modern systems have any smell or
toxic effects.

I also have noticed that the air from the Nissan system could be much
cooler than that from the Toyota.

Any help would be appreciated

Cheers

Clive

It happens with me in different cars.

I suspect that the Toyota's air conditioning system is more efficient at
removing moisture from the air, whereas the Nissan's system isn't. I've had
this issue with various machines in the past and have learnt to cope with it
thanks to the aid of some water.

Does the Toyota have climate control? If so you may be able to run with a
slightly higher temperature.

Probably just means it's a better system, taking more moisture out of the
air. Well, more efficient, don't know if that makes it better or not...

I've never had a car with air con or climate control .

Living in scotland means there usually isnt any need for air con as
apart from couple of days in the summer its always cauld and a good
heater is more important :-)

The fact you've never had a car with aircon explains why you don't
understand why it would make one hell of a big difference to you, living in
Scotland.

Aircon is not just cold. It doesn't even need to be cold, because you can
mix the air with heat. But it is dry. VERY dry.

Which means that if you kick the aircon on, your windows clear of any
misting or fogging damn near instantly. WAY before the heater's kicked into
life on a cold damp morning.

Sounds reasonable to me .

Many thanks for all your comments.

Than's an interesting thought. Generally I haven't had such problems
with air-con in buildings, but this is only my second car with air-con.
How did you apply the water with your system?

No, its just a fixed system, ON or OFF, but there is the usual
arrangement for mixing hot & cold air.

The Avensis tends to be quite a warm car, presumably due to the larger
engine size compared with the Nissan, so I tend to make more use of the
air-con.

Someone has recommended sucking Salivix pastilles, so I might try some.

Regards

Clive

<wild guess>
Open bottle. Place bottle to lips. Tilt bottle.

I very much doubt it's engine heat. Probably more down to the larger glass
area. Is it a darker colour, too?

It could simply be that it's a powerful system?

There are two techniques. One, open bottle, hold bottle to mouth, drink.
The second involves a scantily clad young lady applying it to herself, which
you then... okay okay. Heh. Cough.

Gotya. Using air recirculation will increase the leeching effect of water
leaving your body...

Probably because of the huge windscreen and large areas of glass.

Hmm. Okay. I forgot to mention: I wear trousers and long sleeved shirts,
to keep the highest possible relative humidity next to as much of my skin as
possible. This helps.

The repeat of Brainiac on Saturday demonstrated that you drive better
when there are three young ladies changing out of their office clothes
into their evening going-out clothes in the car. Obviously scantily clad
young ladies are an extremely beneficial accessory for both safety and
comfort reasons.
